isp shutdown account due to mail spamming

Postby soderberg » Sat Jan 09, 2010 8:59 pm

Hello all, this is my first post so be gentle!

Got my mouse on the order button for a DS209. Like this product because it includes server software. I could setup my own server using an old computer (ubuntu server) but there is too much to configure plus that this NAS is quiet and probably uses much less power than your average computer. Seems like a good deal.

Anyway, I really would like to run my own mail server from home but I'm a little concerned due to ISP regulations. To the point, is the DS209 a "secure" machine, do I need to worry about someone hacking it and using it to spam the world? I don't want my ISP (comhem in Sweden) to shut down my internet connection because of the DS209 being hacked. The way I see it if I do buy the DS209 and it does get hacked then I can't install third-party firewall software to prevent this from happening right? Only certain software can be installed on it, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Running a mailserver from home probably isn't ideal but it seems like a fun thing to tryout :D
Anyone out there using the DS209 as a mailserver (with a proper domain name, not just internal mail)?

Cheers,
Soderberg

Most important: Only allow your DS (with the Postfix server) to use port 25 outbound. So every client in you LAN has to send the email to your DS and the DS forwards it to the recieveing-servers. Even you have a spamming malware in your LAN postfix is designed NOT to behave like a spam client.
Besides: Most malware does not use the LAN mailserver but try to open a direct socket to the receiveing server.

Hey Jahlives thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with postfix yet so although I don't fully understand what your saying right now I hopefully will when I eventually get stuck in.

I've been reading a lot of posts on this forum lately and I get the feeling that any modifications (hardware/software) to the NAS e.g. installing postfix is not officially supported by Synology. It's mostly the users hacking and installing addon packages which is great but Synology seem so closed and have a "if you do this we won't support it" mentality. I hope I'm wrong, what is your view on the subject?

All I want really is a quiet little low-energy NAS powerful enough to host some websites and run mail and webmail services. That's why I want a DS209 but I don't want a locked-down system and that's why I'm also thinking about just getting a "normal" yet slim computer with perhaps Ubuntu-server using webmin. A PC version of the mac-mini (pc is cheaper) would be really nice! Here's an example: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1965

Just realised this is very off-topic, but this is some options for me right now:
Synology DS-209 http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS209/index.php
Qnap TS-219P http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=122
Excito Bubba II http://www.excito.com/bubba/features.html

Haven't yet found a mini pc that is quiet low-energy yet powerful (and not too expensive as you might have guessed). The DS209 is still on the top of the list although I wonder if the 16bit 256MB ram is enough for my usage:
- Drupal sites (apache, mysql, php5)
- Mail + webmail (Squirrelmail)
- NAS stuff (1080p blu-ray streaming)

Got thoughts on the off-topic subject (anyone)?

Not at all.

There is a Mail Station package provided, maintained and supported by Synology. Postfix is on the box.
jahlives just gives some hints how to modify the postfix and other built in software to extend security or functionality etc.

Thanks for clearing that up Potter, I was hoping for an answer like that.

Well the only reason I haven't yet ordered the DS209 is because I'm still not sure if it is fast enough for me. I will check the requirements for Drupal etc and try to find a decent benchmark test.. I could pay more for a faster NAS but what's the point when I don't even know what specs I need ;). I want the right specs for the job (uses less power, quieter).

Must say, it's very frustrating having money but not knowing what to get ;)
It's usually the opposite for me...
