iTunes server with Airtunes to Airport Express

Postby niels » Wed May 21, 2008 9:48 am

I consider buying a DS-107 or DS-108j for playing music from a NAS to my hifi system in the living room.

I'd like to setup a connection from the iTunes server to my laptop with iTunes, then via airtunes to a Airport Express which is connected (through s/pdif) to my hifi system.

Is this possible? Does anyone have experience with this?

Sorry for the late confirmation. We have tested the AirPort Express. It can seamlessly stream music from Synology's iTunes server. Check this out

We want to be able to stream directly from the server to the Airport, without passing through the PC (iTunes).

But how do you expect to control the playback?

I'd expect to control playback using my Iphone. Either with 'Remote' app from Apple, or the DS Audio app.

Not sure if it's technically possible, but the request has been heard :)

Very good suggestion. I'm looking forward to stream directly my music from the server to Airport Express without using my PC...

I second that!
Another suggestion would be to use the audio from the usb of the diskstation (in my case ds-209) to play the music through a usb-to-analogue converter into your amplifier. Using Itunes ofcourse:)

It would be great i that would be made possible, that was the main reason i bourght my DS110j, man was i dissapointed as it didn't work, and i had to have my pc turned on...

Well Apple does it.
Look at it this way, the Synology diskstation would then work seemlesly with the "apple world"!

P.S Sorry for my poor english.

Jep, this setup would be awesome:
- directly streaming from a DS to an Airport Express
- applying audio station or DS audio to control the DS

Pleeeease include this stuff into the next firmware release. When I got it right, you already implemented the functionality of streaming to some media renderers into the current beta release. So add the airport express as a media renderer and alter DS audio.

Thumbs up!

I coudln't agree more. One of my main regrets is that I can not stream my music directly to my airport express. I really don't even care about controlling the music remotely, so long as I can put it on shuffle from the DS and let it run indefinitely.

YES - this is a feature we really need! Actually I'm planning to use the iPad for this. I think my iPhone is too small to control the whole iTunes library, but if this could be done - the iPad would be perfect for it! :)

That'd be great to use a DS serving all my music instead of a Mac computer running iTunes. I think Apple did a really great job with the iTunes remote plus a running Mac streaming to an Airport Express connected to whatever stereo. Now I'd like to shut down the Mac and use the DS-iTunes Server instead.

This setup makes all sqeezebox and -alike obsolete. And with the iPhone's big display (even showing album artwork!), the music-selection is quite a snap. And of course I agree with puggard - using the upcoming iPad as remote would be even more fascinating, since with its big screen one even could watch videos...

I'm really looking forward to have this setup in my home.

I fiddled around with roap_play and "ruby roap client" but so far nu succes. If this would work with the DS Audio player I would be crying with happiness.(not really...but i would be really really glad).
Don't forget support for Android and Windows Mobile Series 7 (or something).
