Yup. Bad luck. At least it's not me. I almost doubted myself... :-)

For all who have the same "old hardware": This works great!

I am able to telnet into the synology 409 box but that is about it. Typing in transmission-adduser just returns an error. What am I doing wrong. I have enabled home directories, I installed the spk package. I am not able to change to any directories when logged in. This is frustrating to have directions that just say "do this" but its not that simple it seems.

I assume people in the underground mod know what transmission is and the advantage of transmission might be different for different people. ...

Apparantly, not all people know this, given this topic.

same problem as other folks before me.
install went great, turned on userhomes.
now ssh'd into my cubestation 407e
i dont know much about ssh so i just copied and entered
Code: Select all
transmission-adduser

this returns an error:
Code: Select all
Cubestation> transmission-adduser
-ash: transmission-adduser: not found

so what to do?.....
how do i get a directory listing in ssh?

should userhomes be active before installation perhaps?
let me try that...

This is really frustrating. All I want to do is get this application running. I followed the steps got a bootstrap working, got ipkg working, got ipkg to install transmission. There is zero documentation as to how to start actually using transmission that I can find. The transmission home page just brings you back to this page. I need help. I have a DS409 and I suspect that might be part of the reason the spk does not work. Is anyone listening to this thread that is more versed in the issue?

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the late reply. For some reason, I never got new post notification from the forum for all these new posts!

I will try replying to most of your questions. I also updated the first post in this thread with more info. Please check that out too. I will keep updating it as and when I find something out.

Thanks,
Sarav

Well, I have the same problem that brasi1 had. No instructions are displayed after the installation. And yes, since I saw that post earlier, I was specifically looking for some. Maybe 'cause I'm not using English as my primary language?

The instructions I'm talking about are displayed after you click "Next" in the "Confirm Setting" step in the package installation wizard. The package is installed and then the instructions are displayed with a "Finish" button. Did you not see that? Please try with the newly uploaded spk (will upload soon - check the first post).

maelcum wrote:Further down I came across those two lines:
echo "Run transmission-adduser as root to add Transmission usage privileges to a user" > $SYNOPKG_TEMP_LOGFILE
echo "User home must be present to use Transmission." >> $SYNOPKG_TEMP_LOGFILE

This looks like the messages you are referring to. And those should also be written to the logs. So I checked the log of the Transmission-Package. Empty.

The $SYNOPKG_TEMP_LOGFILE does NOT refer to the package log that's available when your click on the "Get Info" button. I don't know where that log is read from. If someone can figure that out and let me know, I can update my spk to make better use of it. Like errors with adding users, start, stop, etc.

Thanks,
Sarav

I looked at that link and it runs transmission as root. I would advice against using it for the following reasons:
* A user could easily overwrite the files of another user by changing the download directory to that of a different user.
* If there are any security holes in the transmission daemon or web UI, someone can exploit it and gain admin privileges to your NAS.

My spk avoid both of the above. At the least, take a look at the start-stop-status script inside the spk and learn how to run the script as someone other than root.

Ok everyone, I posted a vastly improved spk. With lots of error check, helpful error messages and a few enhancements to the transmission-adduser script. I just updated the link, in my post.

One thing that's a pain to improve is the default download dir. You will have to point it to an existing folder, then stop and start the service. It's just too complicated to replace it with "sed". Way too many escape characters required for "/" and I still couldn't get it to work properly.

It's 5am and I haven't slept yet :(

hey there

i manually created a folder "usr/local/bin" and reinstalled the package, now indeed the "transmission-adduser" works.
i've added a user with webui port and password.
but when i want to run the package from package management i get an error: "Failed to run the package service."

by the way, i never used user-homes before, i just switched it on and see i have two new shares now: one called "home" and another called "homes".
is this good?

thanks.
