SVN server on DS508

Postby gjaegy » Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:40 am

Hi,

I have just bought a DS508 and I am very happy with it. All our important data are now secured.

There is one important piece that I would like to store on it, our source code repository. I know I could plug a PC with the SVN server running, storing the DB on the DS508. However, as I know DS508 is actually a linux station, wouldn't it be possible to install the server directly in the box ? How could I do that ?

Thanks !

I am heading for exactly the same solution (running svn on ds508-apache ). The toolchain information/links to implement this are some how out of date (cpu?, compiler/configure flags)

I would be glad to get futher information on running svn on your nice nas!

I compiled subversion 1.4.6 for the DS508 if anyone's interested, pretty basic, uses svnserve, haven't tried to do anything with httpd(+ssl) or ssh tunneling. Also, I haven't tested it extensively so please use it at your own risk.

Thank you very much for sharing those SVN 1.4 binaries (v2 works very well for me)! On your website, you mention you'd be willing to compile SVN 1.5 for the DS508, if there was enough interest. Well, you can definitely count me interested! :)

Ok, that's enough interest I suppose :) My first attempt at 1.5.4 is linked below. Please be careful as I'm very new to cross compiling and am just hard coding around the configure & make script auto-detection issues that are encountered... basically use it at your own risk and please backup often, I'd hate for anyone to lose any source code due to some obscure issue with these subversion builds!

Hi,

thanks a lot for your work.

I have tried to setup the system, however it seems there is no "local" folder in the /usr directory, so I couldn't go further than step 6.

Do I have to create the local folder manually ?

Thanks,
Gregory

ElBee,

sorry for the (very) long delay, but I couldn't find the time to test this before :(

Now, I have set up the 1.5.4 version you compiled, on the latest firmware. Once set up, I have simply copied my old repository files (from a Windows version of svn) in the SVN directory of the DS508. And guess what ? it simply works :D

I am very happy with that. I haven't tested extensively yet, so I am not completely sure it works well, but first impression is very very positive !

Two questions I have:
- do I have to start the service manually each time I turn the box on ?
- could you please explain me how you compiled subversion ? In the case I want to update to a newer version in the future, I would feel like an abuse to ask you to compile it again, so I would rather do it myself (if I can - I have nearly zero experience with Unix ;))

Thanks in any case for your great work. really really appreciated !

Cheers,
Greg

I've been using svn 1.5.5 ipkg from the syno-e500 feed on ds408 just fine.

As far as I know, ds408 and ds508 use the same CPU. So I'm wondering why going the long way of compiling yourself (svn has quite a lot of dependencies, more if you count the SWIG perl binding and python bindings). In the long run, it's going to be difficult to manage and upgrade this way.

If there is any problem of the ipkg, I'd rather see people spending time help fixing these problems. The effort spent likely will benefit other optware platforms. Honestly I'm quite disappointed at the high ratio of optware feed users vs optware developers, especially from the synology community.

What exactly is this ipkg you are talking about ?

Any link ? Does it provide a SVN server installation package ?
