WordPress 2.7 - Automatic Upgrade... [SOLVED]

Hi there,

Has anyone succeeded in making the built-in automatic upgrade functionality work in WordPress 2.7 on a Syno NAS?

All I get is a "Connection information"-screen, where I can fill in some FTP information - although I have no clue what information to fill in. From what I can gather through google it might be a file-ownership issue on the NAS, as it's suppose to upgrade autimatically without giving the "Connection information"-screen. Although if anyone could tell me which information to fill in there, that would be just as great.

I am getting to the part when the new package is downloaded, but then fails to unpack it. I fill in localhost:21 at hostname and use the admin username and password. All rights for the admin user are write, so I don't know where I go wrong.

Any updates here yet? I'm running into the exact same problem with WP 2.7.1 and Synology DS209+
I've also found out you should be able to use direct transport or SHH transfer of files. WP only uses ftp when these two options are not available.

I did manage to install wordpress 2.8.4. onto the syno ds109 using phpmyadmin to create a db first. All seems to work but not the automatic upgrade. I installed it using no virtual host so i added the first code section to my config file. But what then do i need to enter in the fields when i want to install a plugin or automaticly upgrade to a higher version of WP? I tried the admin account and root account. I tried it in full address and even localhost but nothing seems to catch on.

Do i need to add this code to the config sample file and then start the install?

I'm having the same issue with plugins (haven't had an upgrade of WP yet. The connection information it's looking for is FTP user information. You have to enable FTP on the Syno NAS. The hostname is the hostname you assigned to the NAS, and then the FTP user and password. Once I added that, I was no longer having issues downloading or copying the new plugins. The issue I was having was actually in the removal of the old plugin. It was/is still failing to remove the old plugin after installing the new one. Until I can get that working, I can't auto upgrade plugins. I'm assuming that will still be the case for the actual release of WP as well.

any other suggestions? I've set the permissions to 777 on all directories, but that has still not worked.

Even using the hostname i set for the syno instead of the url where it can be reached did not work.

It would be really great if Synology or someone else created a wordpress package which solves this annoying problem.

I manually upgraded to the latest version of WP, but still cannot have the plug-ins automatically upgrade.

I added the code:

I have tried changing permissions, but no luck yet.

Hi all,

I had the same problem with my DS209.
The problem is with the file/folder owner. By default the web server software uses 'nobody' as the file/folder owner, when you install wordpress using a network share the system assumes resets the name of the file owner to that of the login you used to access the share preventing the web server software making any changes, that's the reason why the automatic update feature doesn't work, even if you input the correct FTP login information in wordpress.
To correct the problem you must enable the terminal service in the Synology system and login as root using a SSH software.
After that you write this:

chown -R nobody:nobody /volume1/web/wordpress

You can change the /volume1/web/wordpress to the specific structure you have.

After this you should be able to use the automatic upgrade feature of wordpress.

Since I can't try this until I get home (thank you locked out work laptop), does this also address the issue with automatic updating of plugins and the installation of new themes?

Hi Pedro, thanks for the great reply. It work like a charm when updating plugins, but when it comes to the update of wordpress i did yesterday get errors, but today it works ok again.

I tried the chown command and get:

chown: /volume1/web/redonegreen/wordpress: Operation not permitted
chown: /volume1/web/redonegreen/wordpress: Operation not permitted

It shows trice. Not sure what's up. Any ideas?
