Greetings JohnParsons

The DS108j does not have enough computing resources to support the Mail Server adequately.

Hope this answers your question, and Happy New Year.

Postby kevinkong116 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 9:17 am

Hi Development team,

Mail Station is one of the best function on this product. however there is only support "+model" on the latest F/W. My 207 can't enjoy this great thing.
So would you guys help to revsie the further firmware that our 20x or 10x can use mail station. Thanks for your helping!!!

As an Owner of a DS207,

I know without a doubt the hardware can handle an email server setup.
Looking at the specifications of the hardware, it is clear to see why the 108j has been omitted.
But the DS207 should most certainly be able to run an email server.
I understand this is a beta firmware. And I do see and understand the answer above for the 108j.

But as for the DS207, come on guys, I bought this thing no more than a year ago.
I was happy with the firmware released at the end of 08, and all the effort people put into trying and succeeding in setting up email servers on their synology boxes.
I know 2 other people with the 207's, we had recommended it to each other. All product cycles come to and end i know. However this device (DS207) has been selling in major retail chains. (newegg)
for example since fall of 2008. I never heard of any announcement from Synology stating they would be ceasing firmware improvements for the 207. You don't sell a product on the market and then less than 6 months after it starts to disappear, discontinue support for it. That is just rude.

Give us our mail server Synology, even if you have to put a disclaimer or check box in the firmware for the 207 owners.
We know the email server can be done on the DS207. Give us one final Firmware before you put us out in the cold.

207 firmware updates are still released...

mailstation isn't a firmware thing, it's and optional spk.

Can you explain why it can't run on a DS108j?

I think it's because...

106e has only 32Mb, CPU is possibly also 200Mhz..
So mail server would not be THAT fast..
But the rest of the firmware WOULD be nice....

As far as explaining why.
That is not my job, however it is the job of Synology to give detail too it.
And yes, "I believe" the memory limitation is a great factor (32mb on the 108j), considering all the other services that run on the firmware while the unit is in operation.

We need to hear a straight answer from Synology about our 207's plain and simple.
My opinions mean nothing right now, however, depending on what the out come is to this firmware release for my 207 is, THEN and only then will my opinion be all that I need.
The 207 is still being sold in some places, no where on Synology's website does it show as discontinued. And all of us who have worked together to setup an email sever know full well,
the DS207 can have this feature. So tell us Synology, what is in store for the future of the 207?

If Synology is going to include a web server function on the DS207 then the obvious compliment to that is an email server.
If this is what you were planning on doing to the DS207 then Synology should never have allowed web server features on the 207(certain products) to begin with.

That is a cruel joke.

please add mail station to DS107

Postby slider2nl » Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:41 am

I hope you guys can reconsider to add mail station to the DS107 and other models because one of my projects i am running on the webstation can really use some mail support.
And i have my DS107 for 4 months now and buying an newer model is not a option for me now.

I wish to echo this plea for the DS207 as well.
A web server without a email server makes no sense.
Hardware wise the DS107, DS207 and CS407e can in fact support an email server.

Please add the Email station for our investments.

As a 207 (128MB) user I am also unpleasantly surprised that no mailservices are available on this relatively new hardware.

Please explain or reconsider.

PS: In the meantime I have read the comments of the beta users. The product seems to be of rather limited functionality. So I guess the decision to not make a version for DS207 was made on marketing grounds.

As a DS207 owner i'd like to echo the comments here, i'd like to have this mail functionality in my 207 (128 MB) as well.
In the past synology has been great with updates en listening to it's users, so i'm confident you guys will do
the right thing......and now i''ll keep my fingers crossed. :)
