Sorry, I will disappoint you but CCxx firmware generation was already there.
And unfortunately, freshly bought HDD with CC1H means only "already updated" from CC1G buggy firmware, probably no more.
Because it seems there are 2 buggy firmware present on market : SD17 and CC1G.

Take a look at this post :
ll the ones I have (21 in total) have had the buggy firmware (either SD17 or CC1G). After upgrading all of them to the fixed firmware (SD1A or CC1H) all troubles seemed to have gone.

So do not expect any PCB changes or "new new" firmware. In my opinion, best hopes are now with 7200.12 generation (even is power consumption was a little increased with first 500Gb 7200.12 disk released from Seagate).
But you experience is very welcome.

Thanks,
Zouk !

So does this mean that we are all screwed? And I just bought 4 1.5TB drives that are useless for the application that I bought them for?

No, not necessarily, it will be very depending of your use and...if you're lucky or not !
Because even of a firmware update, problems seems to be still there. It's just intolerable.
So nobody really knows what are conditions to have a fully functional setup.
Moreover, look at this same user, he got a second DS408 with no problem so far.
Also, maybe problems are result of combination of DS408 and 1.5TB drives, so who really knows ?

But, personally, I will not buy this drive, because when you go into RAID, you primary do that because you want security.
So what's happening when your buy something which is potentially worst than a simple hard drive ? You just spend your money and got problems : no added security, and, in worst case, you experience a data lost !
It's very simple, when a drive is showing so often problems despite a "new firmware", I will no trust it. I will not count on "luck" parameter to see if "it will be better" for me. It's not wise at all, because you can choose something else at same time which you know it will work perfectly. I do know that 1.5TB are not so cheap compared to 1TB drives, but security are more important for me.

So, it is wiser to stay for now at 1TB, since Seagate 1TB do not have this kind of problems, or wait for a next Seagate 1.5TB or 2TB hard drive generation, or finally wait for another brand with 1.5TB drives and see if it's better.

But, again, it's only my opinion.

Note : And I'm a Seagate fan ! ;-)

I understood well,

My monologue was more for people which are going to get 1.5TB hard drives.
I know my answer will not be helpful but, it's very simple, at this time there are just *NO* definitive fix !
You already have latest firmware, there are nothing more to do !

Take contact with Synology and Seagate support :-/

Interesting. I am using a DS-508 running DSM 2.0-0728 firmware with five ST31500341AS drives installed as RAID-5. All five drives shipped with SD17 and all field-patched to SD1A. it has now been almost five weeks with no hiccups, and I have been streaming music and video to multiple targets. Still keeping a watch on the unit but so far, so good.

Agreed that no bug-free firmware if there is design bug on PCB or cache.

I'm still very busy that have no time can swap the HDD for testing. Btw, CC1H firmware can be found by search at Yahoo or Google. Heard that CC1J is already released as well but not yet can be found for download.

Please note that SDxx an CCxx CAN NOT be exchanged, meant that the older PCB of ST31500341AS with firmware SDxx, the latest upgradable firmware is SD1A.

Drive 3 crashed in the middle of this morning while I was not using it. The last 2 drive crashes have been drive 3. SO I am gonna have seagate replace drive 3.

There is now a class action lawsuit against seagate on these drives.

For all.

I used DS106j with firmwere Version: DSM 2.0-0731.
I tried to use Seagate ST31500341AS as EXTERNAL 1.5TB HDD via USB-SATA Brigde.

DS106j recognized 1.5TB HDD ,and DS106j could complete initialize FAT32 format.
(and shear it.)

But,I'd like to use this EXTERNAL HDD with Native format, due to file size limitation(4GB).

So,I tried to operate initialize Native Format.
But,DS106j couldn't FORMAT the Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB HDD with NATIVE FORMAT.
DS106j logged "The system failed to initialize external disk [USB Disk 1] to [Native] format."

and,I tried to delete pertation with "fdisk" command and initialize with "mke2fs -j" command succusessfully.
but,DS106j could not recognized this EXTERNAL HDD with ext3 format.

What should I do to use this HDD with NATIVE FORMAT?
Can I use it by updating the next firmware?

Please,Help ME!!

Thanks. Kaz

How on earth are all of you able to determine the firmware version on your Seagate (ST31500341AS) drives. I'm on windows using XP and both the internal OS tool and Seagate's tool are unable to find any of my DS209+ discs FW versions. The Synology disk managment info isn't giving me any firmware version either. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

i just got one of these 1.5tb drives today thinking all would be ok, the drive has the cc1h firmware. utilising the latest dsassistant with the latest 839 firmware on a ds107.

The software gets as far as formatting partition which seems to happen for a while and then the error message appears stating could not format partition.

So i guess this drive has to go back or directly into my popcorn hour?

Hi thering1975, I got the 1.5T with CC1H today (and ds107) and ran into the exact same problem. Long story short, I downloaded "gparted" and boot with it and format the partition dsassistant created..... reboot and re-run dsassistant and it skip the formatting and everything seems fine afterward.

herbert/thering1975 ,

im in the exact same position as your same drive - cc1h same synology box same firmware. I tried your soln of using gparted - I noticed when i booted into the drive i had a couple of different partitions on the drive so i merged them all together creating a big ext3 partition. Re-inserting the drive back into my ds107 seems to give the same old error when it trys to format the data partiton - can you give me any more detail on what you did in gparted.

My status light seems to be continually flashing yellow - any ideas ???

Cheers
Will
