Wake on Lan

OK, here is my "me too" post to say that I support the idea of being able to wake my DS-207+ via wake on lan. Thx.

I'm also really interested in this WOL feature. Especially for when I'm on holiday and I need my NAS server just for a day or two. I hope a firmware update will fix this

For those who would like Shut Down on LAN:
This is possible if you set your NAS Server on a static IP and you Port Forward port number 5000 on your router.

After port forwarding port number 5000, you can acces your NAS server via a external IP address like this:
http://xx.xx.xx.xx or http://xx.xx.xx.xx:5000 where xx.xx.xx.xx is your external IP address. To find what your external IP address is, check out:

After you log in on http://xx.xx.xx.xx as the admin you can shut down your NAS with the button "Restart" on the Left side. In the drop down menu, choose "Shut down".

Hi, A little bit off topic, but isn't it possible to just shedule a power on ? The same principle as the power off function. Like that you can shedule a power on the NAS at 7am and shedule a power down at midnight for example.

My box is hidden away to keep the noise down and I feel like a caveman, having to drag my ass down there and manually push a button to wake it up!

I still haven't found a clear cut answer:

• is the ethernet adapter WOL-able?
• is the mobo WOL-able?
• is it "only" a firmware limitation?

I am right before bying a DS408, but the missing WOL is a close to 100% KO for the synology box.

Any feedback from synology? I didnt see any here for a long time.

We were asking about WOL, not scheduled power-on... maybe it's the same thing hardware-wise (I'm not savvy enough to know), but I haven't found a clear-cut answer on the WOL part, on this thread or otherwhere (is that a word ??).
This thread is the biggest one on the WOL subject so IMO there should be a definite answer.

This subject has been covered many times as HArry says, so I don't know why the answers are not comming up but anyway here is my answer for you..

WOL is used by people to mean different things so I break them down.

1) The classic definition of a WOL device is a device that is able to sit in hibernation state and wake itself up when probbed by another LAN device. For a NAS this can mean two things, both require specific hardware...a) Hard disk Hibernation (supported by Synology on old and new models, old and new firmware with compatible hard drives), b) all circuit board hibernation, except LAN circuit. To my knowledge this is not implemented by Synology as it is another cost all would have to bear (whether they want the function or not) and I guess the rewards had not so far been deemed great enough.

2) The other part to 1) above is the ability of another LAN device to be scheduled to probe other LAN devices to effectively wake them up. This is just a software function and there were requests for it to be added to the Syno firmware (don't know if it is) however you can easily mod your Syno Box to add this function if you want it

3) The wrong use of WOL is to refer to scheduled full power up and power down of a device. The Synology products support scheduled power down (to my knowledge), but only a few (some of the new ones) support scheduled power up. Obviusly this requires specific hardware and devices that support scheduled power up effectively have a lower power clock circuit (lower power than disk hibernation) able to power up the NAS.

Thanks Robin, I was looking for 1)b) (not scheduled power-on as HarryPotter said), so apparently it isn't (and never will be) possible.
I know about 2), found lots of scripts about it... unfortunately I wanted my PC to wake my Syno, not my Syno to wake my PC... never mind then!

To sum up, in layman terms for all those who will come accross this later:

• is the ethernet adapter WOL-able?
  NO.
• is the mobo WOL-able?
  NO.
• is it "only" a firmware limitation?
  NO, hardware limitation.

If you want Wake-On-Lan to work from anywhere on the Internet, your router must be configured with a port-forward to a specific IP-adres.
In this case the broadcast adres!!!
This because there is no IP-adres yet, because your (workstation-/server-/NAS-) station is OFF.

To make it work, they MUST be equiped with wake-on-lan power-supply/Motherboard/NIC (for workstations/servers)

The portforwarding must go from the Internet to your local IP-adres xxx.xxx.xxx.255
IP-adres xxx.xxx.xxx.255 is always the broadcast adres.

With a special tool you can submit your MAC-adres of your workstation or NAS and transmit it from within your LAN or form any place from the Internet to your public Internet IP-adres to passthrough your router.

Even without a tool you can boot your system by using a special website and submit the parameters; IP-adres of your home and the specific MAC-adres of your system.

As a feature request, could there be a function on the management gui to allow for Wake-on-Lan (WOL) of PCs on your home network? I'm thinking of a nice graphical frontend where you could click on an icon representing your PC and the Synology would send the preconfigured WOL magic packet to wake up the PC.

This works manually already if you have SSH enabled and log on to your Synology from the Internet, then run a script such as wake.pl (when on fw 722, for the script use Google or PM me). This allows me to wake up an XP workstation on my home network, work with it using Remote Desktop (again using SSH), and then shut it down. And I can wake it up again when needed.

Please Synology, consider adding a cool GUI for WOL of local devices such as PCs

Are you sure that hardware (network-chip) is the limitation? Often WOL is only disabled.

Can you add the list of not supported models, and if there are, a list of supported models ?
I am thinking of trading the 106e for a new 209+
Especially since I noticed the 727 firmware will be the latest one supporting the 106e

I am sorry, I was talking about timed power on and not WOL. WOL isnt supported on any current model.
