Remote Access to DS108J

Postby sbellfield » Fri Aug 08, 2008 6:53 pm

I have setup a unique login at DynDNS.ORG and put the DDNS info into both my netgear router and the DS108j

When I access the unique address in my browser [http://myname.dyndns.org] I get the login screen from my netgear router rather than the 108J.

Any ideas on this?

Hello,
You have to redirect a public port (i.e. port 9999) to a private port (I think the access port on the DS108J is 5000) trhu the protocol TCP.
All this programmation is made in your router manager.
After that, you are able to connect to your DS108J thru Internet like :
http://your_name.dyndns.org:9999
Good luck.

Philippe from Paris.

Phil

Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I have forwarded Port 5000 to the IP of the Server (inbound traffic) but still no joy.
(I only want to access files and manage the device remotely)

In the EZ-Interet settings of the Netgear it says

Internal address:192.168.0.1
External address:91.xx.168.X33
status "Normal"

But, the 192.168.0.1 address is the router not the Synology.
So when I goto http://myname.dyndns.org this is pointing to the router not the Synology server and I get the router logon screen instead of the Syniology.

If I goto 192.168.0.3 through my browser locally it calls up the synology fine.

Almost - but not quite working!

if you have forwarded port 5000, use it ;)
try http://myname.dyndns.org:5000/

btw: if you redirect port 80 incomming, you dont need the port settings...
(and your routermenu shouldnt be accessible from outside, anyway)

but you will be able to test this only from outside!!!
you cant test this really within you lan!
(uhmm... yes. with a proxy server outside)

I finally realised that you can't test it from 'inside' i.e. on the LAN.

I phoned a friend and they confirmed I had, in fact, got remote access working OK without realising it.

Many thanks for all the responses. :D

It depends on the router. I have a Level-one FBR-1407A and this one is capable to test everything "from inside".
but my new router (D-Link) f.e cant do it.

Grrr i now find that I can access the DS108J and access the based file manager program and upload files easily.

But when I try to download files a get a pop-up window "obtaining file information" which never moves on and the file is not downloaded to me.

Maybe I still don't have all the right ports open....

This question is to sbellfield or anyone who can answer. When you say that you created the account with DYNDNS.org and had the information set into your router and synology product. Is this simply the dynamic addressing or did you have to purchase a domain/web address in order to access your site remotely?

Reason I ask is because i set up an account with the same company and my address is something.homeftp.net, which basically pings my external address, but never gets inside my network to display any information. I just need to know if i need to purchase a domain to remotely access my synology server.

Thanks in Advance
