Synology Check IP

Postby eric.s » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:39 am

I am just curious about the DS behavior. I am using DS106j and it access 59.124.61.242/checkip.php, 208.78.68.70 and 204.13.249.70 every 3 minutes or so. Those links are from Synology and all it does is checking the IP of the DS. What I want to know is why DS is doing that and which part of DS operation requires it to access Synology IP checking sites.

Thanks.
Eric

Greetings eric.s

I'm conferring with our development department, however what firmware are you using?

Update::

Our system will contact our server if you are using DDNS, because external IPs change every three minutes; we have to update our record, which inturn will update the DDNS servers. If you are performing the update directly to DDNS, the security software on DDNS servers may think your server is a SpamBot and will block you.

Hope this helps

Eric your comment is very valid and good, although the answer does not make sense to me.
I have a lot of device types and brands that contact successfully DDNS server directly without being blocked.

My question is what is the point of Synology's 59.124.x.x address not to answer the Synology NAS itself and forward
the request to a valid DDNS server ? Since it is there why not answering back to the NAS ?

How less suspicious looks a traffic that is destined to port 81 than to 80 which is also http traffic ?
