New Firmware is killing the fan

Postby NetBoot » Sun Mar 09, 2008 12:44 pm

The fan has been running continuously now and the noise is getting unbearable on a daily basics. I have to shut the DS down now because of this.

I don't think my fan is going to last.

Greetings NetBoot, Denner

If you want to acquire a replacement fan, please contact online support for further assistance. Please be aware that parts for the older models are becoming rare, our support team may not be able to fulfill your request. Be sure to post your complete international mailing address in the support form to speed up processing time.

Hope this helps.

I seriously doubt that firmware will cause a fan to fail. Fans are notorious for failing, they are a physical moving piece of hardware after all. What the firmware did do is cause your NAS to reboot, which would cycle the fan off then back on, so if it was close to failure, that cycling would "loosen" it up and start any noise that would have eventually occurred anyway.

My DS 107+ is brand new, and did not hear it at all before the install of the new firmware, but now suddenly is starts running when it is not in use, an just running and running . . . !

Franklin wrote:1) I can hear my system hibernate the HDDs, but the fan stays on. Why?
The fan will always remain active, even during the hibernating state. Our engineers have experimented with having the fan off and found that the HDD/system motherboard can become overheated. This is why the fan is on about 60% of the nominal speed. The fan will enter "low-speed" mode after one minute the disks enter hibernation mode. When there is disk activity, the fan will return to full power.
Note: for the DS106 series, and DS-101g+, the fan will activate if the system temperature exceeds 47C.
Note: For all RS models, the fans remain at a fixed speed; please also note that the RS is marketed towards markets which will utilize a machine/server room; please consider the CS model if noise is a concern.

Same here :(

I hope it will be resolved in the final version. If not, I would like to downgrade to the previous version....

As stated previously, all x07 models have their fans in the active state, and will not shut down. It does not matter which firmware you are using...

Just to restate my issue.

My fan sounds like a busted chainsaw!

You know the sound, when a pc power supply fan starts screaming when it's going to die!

That's how it sounds.

I understand that there's a cost of the fan and shipping. I just wanna know how to summit the request on getting a replacement and that Synology knows I'm having an issue.

Hopefully, I won't need to replace it again. Since, this would be the second time I replaced the fan.

Note: If the supply is limited or out of stock. Is there a 3rd party supplier to purchase a new fan?

Greetings NetBoot

I have a limited quantity of fans available for North American customers. If you submit a support ticket with your complete address (sig link) I should eventually see the ticket and I can dispatch a fan to you.
