HowTo customize the ftp welcome banner?

Postby ACE² » Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:50 pm

Hello,

I want to customize the ftp welcome banner.

Out of the box you get:
"220 Disk Station FTP server at hostname ready."

Any opportunity to hide the Vendor to give no information about the server to the OutSide world like this:

"220 FTP Server ready."

kind regards

Tom

Hi there,
unfortunately ftp daemon has hard-coded the string.
To resolve hostname, it is doing a uname command.

But you can customize by adding an file nammed /etc/ftpwelcome.
This file is read by the ftpd and displayed before authentification.

Once connected and authenticated, you can customize too by adding a file named /etc/ftpmotd.
It is displayed just after the login.
But you are not able to put escape stuff like %M or %U.

hope this helps.

I've followed your advice and have created the file /etc/ftpwelcome
But how do I write to this file when logged in with SSH?

Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB in USB 1

Okay, I figured out how to write to the file in VI editor, but when I log in to the ftp, it shows:

[21:56:34] [R] Connected to DiskStation
[21:56:34] [R] 220- FTP Server ready
[21:56:34] [R] 220 Disk Station FTP server at DiskStation ready.

It reads the line from /etc/ftpwelcome but it still shows the default diskstation welcome banner to.
How do I get wrid of this?

this is usually what the -h or -H option would be for but it seems the ftpd on the syno does currently not support that option

you could do this by manually editing synoinfo.conf when logged in as root (not as admin).

That's a nifty toy. Installed the package and edited the section with mail. Worked perfectly :)
