Time Backup OR Network Backup?

Postby begunfx » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:21 am

I was just wondering what people thought of using Time Backup versus a Network Backup. I have a DS412+ and am adding a DS1812+ which will function as my backup server. Before adding the 1812+ I had a ReadyNas pro pioneer as my backup server, and was running network backups of shared volumes once a week. I was wondering if give a choice of one or the other would you guys recommend using the time backup (giving me snapshot history backups) or running once a week network backups. I realize that a Time Backup would give me finer/grain control over files backed up, just wanted some opinions / suggestions etc.

One extra question/comment: I'm assuming I can run a Time Backup from the DS412+ to the DS1812+? Yes?

OR? -> and!
You can use Time Backup (TB) next to Backup and Restore.
- My very dynamic data -Office documents- is backupped with TB (every day).
- A larger subset of my data is backupped with Backup and restore (once a week).
- The rest of my data can be replaced easily, no need for a backup.

AFAIK, there are some restrictions for TB:
- Only one remote task (there seems to be a tweak for this)
- Only complete share(s). I had to organize my Office documents in a separate share.

Very sensible advice from Hernkg and exactly the same setup as i have employed.
