Why is deleting so slow?

Postby RzB » Mon Jul 16, 2012 8:20 pm

I have a DS211J - two 2T drives set up in a mirrored configuration with one volume. The drives are Western Digital WD20EARS-60MVWB0. OS is DSM 4.0-2228. I'm using Win7 64bit.

The volume is not quite half full.

I want to delete all files and folders from the drives. Doing a delete from Windows is taking 40+ minutes - there must be a better way - yes/no?

Thanks,
RzB

Have you tried logging on to the DS as admin and deleting files from there? Is it any quicker?

better way: log in through telnet or ssh and delete using rm -rf (careful here: you could loose everything, make sure you are in the right directory !).

It will be MUCH faster than from Windows.

Good luck !

If you have any experience of Unix this command is similar in operation to DLT. If you use it and you are in the wrong directory...use it at your peril.

As I wrote, using the 'delete' function within DSM should be fast enough.
