I'm gonna piss everyone off now, but my DS411j is backing up to a JMicron USB device just fine :?

However the capacity of the device isnt huge so I will need a new one at some point, when that time comes I'll avoid a JMicron device just in case... so thanks for heads up at least guys! :)

My backup problems with the DS211j are over,

Postby jamin0 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 3:32 pm

To make a long story short... after my many many communications with customer support and the DS211j product manager, they gave me a free upgrade to that DS212+. I was then able to successfully backup 800GB of data via USB to a device that uses the JMicron chip set.

Like I said in my earlier posts, don't waste to much time talking to customer support about this. They will just give you the same template response. Instead use the link to the Contact Us form and make your grievances heard there. You are more likely to get someone with the power of the pen and get some real support.

During the diagnosis of my backup failures I too was told by customer support that devices using the JMicron chipset were not supported. The reason being that the JMicron chipset cannot handle large data transfers. Obviously I smelled a lot of BS with that answer so I contacted JMicron about it and of course the rep I talked to denied such a claim and was not too happy that Synology customer support is making accusations that all of their products are faulty.

Although it took almost a year for Synology to do the right thing by taking responsibility for their faulty device send me a free upgrade, I am not very happy with them about not disclosing such a major limitation of the product.

I posted that i had an issue with backing up via USB back in June,

After following a post the other day on this thread about updating the driver on the external hard drive, im now able to back up via usb again,

for info it was a WD passport SE 1tb, with a DS411J.

Tried to find the person who said to try it, couldnt find the post but whoever you are thanks, it worked a treat!

I have a 211j, was backing up fine with 1tb WD. Due to backup size I had to go to 2TB, so I upgraded to. 2tb seagate drive in a vantec dock nst-d300s3.

According to synology this is a supported model, but the backup is now randomly locking up, just drops the drive. Never in the same spot, just randomly, normally can't get more than 50gb before a lockup. I have reformatted drive, recreated the backup task, currently running 4.1

It seems quite clear that it's the problem presented in this thread, where does this leave me? I'm using supported hardware, and yet I still have the problem.

Should I just open a ticket, why this has not been fixed is beyond me....

I had the same problem as well. So far, no problems with my external USB JMicron device. But out of the sudden, it was always ejected while performing a local backup.
I found out what was causing the problem: I had a very huge operating system image file created by Norton Ghost on my Diskstation (about 75 GB). Now I recreated this files and let Norton Ghost split it up into 2 GB files. With the help of that, the problem did not reoccur again. So it seems the problem was related to the file size.

USB Backups failing since DSM update

Postby ronrosenfeld » Wed Mar 13, 2013 12:00 pm

On Mar 6 I updated to the latest DSM (4.2-3202) on my DS209. By Mar 10, I finally noticed that the scheduled daily backup of a certain folder to my external USB HDD was not occurring and there were no error messages. The schedule was still present in the Backup and Restore dialog. I deleted the old and initiated a new schedule. The new schedule runs the task, but the scheduled task is now invariably failing.

Manually initiated backup tasks seem to run OK, but the scheduled one fails with an error message in the backup log: Failed to copy file [...filename...].

Suggestions would be appreciated as I really need this backup task to start in the middle of the night when I am asleep.

I wrote too soon. A manually initiated backup just failed after running for about 1 1/2 hrs. It had the same message as above but, following this event, the drive was ejected by the system.

Are you saying that the USB drive was bad or that one of your internal drives was bad? I upgraded to DSM 4.2 last week and I am experiencing the same thing--none of my scheduled backups are running. I can run them manually and they show up as scheduled backups in the Backup and Restore application, but the Resource Monitor app does now show the upcoming scheduled backups.

Problem reoccurred again. Now I bought a new external HDD case with a different chip set. Works fine now!

+1 with a DS210j.

After upgrading to 4.2, no scheduled backups have run. No failures, no log entries, nothing. They're shown as valid backups in Backup and Restore, and the backup tasks show in Task Scheduler, but the 'Scheduled Backups' desktop widget reports 'Task: there is no scheduled backup', and no backups have run.

I've recreated the backup tasks but it's made no difference. I'm now waiting for a DSM update and hoping none of my disks fail in the mean time.

I get the following error when creating a scheduled backup using the Backup and Restore app:

Image

I verified all privileges are correct and logged out/back in again as it suggests. The drive is formatted NTFS, and it reads and writes fine via File Station. The drive is a 1TB WD My Passport. Regardless of whether the drive is supported or not, I wish the error would more accurately reflect what the issue is.

Further specs in signature below, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well, the good news is that after recreating the first of my two backup jobs, although the 'desktop' reported no scheduled backups, they did in fact both kick in overnight and worked as expected. They've also run each night since. So, the trick for me was to redefine one of the jobs. The 'desktop' still reports 'Task: there is no scheduled backup'.
