I have the ds212j with 2x2TB Seagate drives. They are on the compat list.
Installed DSM and updated to v 4 2288 (I think. whatever the newest one is). Created the volume and set it to RAID 0 to take advantage of all 4 TB of space. I created folders and set up a couple of users. I had difficulty getting Win 7 x64 to see it but finally got that working.
Now I copy about a TB of data to the drive. All is good. However, after about 4 days of working just fine I come into the room and the status light is blinking orange which means the volume has crashed. >??? So my data is toast I suppose.
I put in a ticket for support but was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Use Synology Assistant to reinstall FW, this is designed not to touch data partition.

Sorry don't know what FW is. It says the configuration is lost. If I reinstall the DSM isn't it going to wipe out the drive contents?

I have a similar problem on my DS1512+. I upgraded my DSM to 4.0-2228 today and now I can no longer see my volumes and the orange led is blinking. When I go to storage manager it says "There is no volume in your system".
Please someone tell me the data is OK but the FW is screwed up. If this is the case, how do I manually update the DSM? It also says that I need a newer version to update but is there one available?
Any idea would be greatly appreciated. I'm terrified my data is gone..

As long as you can login to the DS I dont think a reinstallation would bring your volume back.
I suggest to contact Synology support, give them remote access to hve a look onto your DS.
If you are familiar with the command line you can telnet/ssh in and check if your data is still there.

I got the system back up and running at the time of the original post, only to have the volume crash AGAIN yesterday. This thing is 3 months old and has crashed twice losing all my data. So much for having a secure place to store my important data..
So far I see this ds212j as a total waste of $600. What an unstable piece of crap.
