Not able to copy file from iTunes server to iPod

Postby Skratt » Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:55 am

Hi,

I just installed iTunes server to facilitate the installation of musice from my Syno to my wife's iPod.
Something strange happens: I can drag'n'drop music files from a lot of place to my wife's iPod within iTunes, but impossible to do it from the shared placeholder (ITunes server).
However, It is ok to listen to musics from the iTunes server.

How can I solved this issue?
Appears nuts that the program should only authorize reading the files.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is just a guess, but do you have Home Sharing turned on, and are you and your wife using the same iTunes store account?

Hi myCloud,

Thanks for your answer, that's interesting.
Could you tell me more about "Home sharing"? What is that? is it a setting on the Synology?
What is it used for?

I just installed iTunes on my wife's profile session on W7.
I didn't bother to declare a iTunes store account on her session.
What would you suggest, to use the same iTunes store account or to use a different one?

Home Sharing is a setting in iTunes that lets other iTunes (Mac or PC) or iDevice users see the iTunes library on your Mac or PC (including when the library is hosted on the DiskStation). Your iTunes is linked to the iTunes Store with an Apple account. Others can log access your Mac or PC library using that account name and password, including being able to drag from your library and drop into theirs.

Synology's so-called iTunes Server (firefly) doesn't support Home Sharing, but only the old network sharing originally in iTunes. IMO, it's worthless, so we use Synology's Audio Station and DS Audio app.

The reason I asked was because you can drag and drop from your iTunes library into hers.

My wife and I each have our own iCloud accounts for email, etc. but in iTunes, she uses my iTunes Store account. That way, we can both use purchases from the iTunes Store (mainly iOS apps).

So basically,

are you telling me Synology's so-called iTunes Server is useless if I want to move music files to an iPod?

I have to say it probably is, but don't know for sure. It was so useless for other things, I quit running it. I never tried using it to synch to any device. I still use iTunes (which gets its library from the DiskStation) for synching to our 4G click-wheel iPod, iPod Touch, and iPad.

After playing around with my 212j I have found the iTunes server fairly useless. I'm finding out it is pretty much a read only (really a play only) folder for use on other iTunes instances. Useful for some I guess. I'm in the process of moving my library to the DiskStation and making it the main storage drive for future purchases or mp3's from CDs. What I am curious about is can I point two computers running iTunes to the same music folder and both have editing rights to it. I'm hoping that the directories created by each iTunes (both logged into the same ID) on different computers will work.

Anyone try that yet?

You don't want to do that. If two computers write-access the same file simultaneously, there's the potential the file will be corrupted and lost. Not what you want for the library index files. iTunes isn't a multi-user database. It's a single-user app that thinks it has exclusive use to the files.

+1

What I do is use a synchronizer program like super flexible file synchronizer to sync the itunes folder from my imac to my mac mini (htpc) and to the synology
