I'm not aware of any expansion units for the DS 210+..

Expansion units are usually only avaivable for high-range diskstations (like the DS 15xx serie)..
The only expansion units which are currently avaivable for diskstations are the DX510 and the DX1211 and none of them are compatible with the DS 210+

Sorry..

I don't know why Synology don't just add an expansion port to the back of all (or most) of their NAS models. It would increase the chances of Synology customers buying an expansion unit rather than external disk drives.

Well i don't know.. Maybe..
I'm considering bying a new 4-bays (maybe 5-bays) to replace my 2-bays NAS..
I need something faster than my DS 211j anyway..

Though, it could indeed be very nice to have expansion units avaivable for all the DS's..

Since all Synology NAS devices share the same DSM, I'm wondering if it's feasible to convince it to recognise a DX unit regardless of which NAS you're using.

I don't know... The DS 412+ is not compatible with any of the expansion units even though it has eSATA port...

Hi

The eSATA cable and connector is made especially for Synology DS, so they have extra cords to control hibernation and setup.

But is there a reason why the DS 412+ is not compatible with the DX 510 expansion unit?

Hi

I guess no other reason that Synology decide which DS should support the DX, I think that Synology calls the DS 712+ is that it can be expanded with the DX (7 = drives)

Ahh... I think your right about that..

So theoretically, the DS 412+ could be able to support expansion units if synology enables it in a firmware update?

Hi

No I don't think they fitted the right eSATA connections, But I would guess (just a guess) that your DS would see the DX and could make a separate volume, but that's all it would do.

Looking at this thread (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49904&start=0) and this page (http://www.synology.com/support/faq_sho ... u&q_id=408) it seems that any Synology NAS with an eSATA port can recognise a DX unit.

However, unless your NAS is specifically designed to be connected to a DX unit, it will suffer three disadvantages:

1. You can only form an independent volume on the DX unit (rather than expand the internal volume on the Diskstation).

2 It will not be able to automatically power on the DX unit (it will power it down though). I suspect this is a software issue that Synology could implement in the firmware. Can anyone confirm?

3. You won't be able to physically "lock" the eSATA cable to the units together. As can be seen in the picture below, the locking feature is both a cable and a faceplate issue. The 210+ does not have the holes either side of the connector. I don't think many people will be bothered by the absence of this feature...
