newB to nas: DS412+ questions

Postby ou8thisSN » Thu May 31, 2012 11:15 pm

So I'm really excited about getting this NAS set up and running, but I had a few questions. Sorry if these are really remedial but I know nothing about this stuff (but learning a lot!).

1. I already ordered this NAS from Best Buy and bought Two Seagate 3TB drives (model: STBD3000100). I did not realize at the time that only certain hard drives are listed on the compatibility, and this is not listed anywhere.

Can I get away with using these drives?

2. I read that people get UPS with the NAS. What happens if the power goes out and I'm not home, and the UPS runs out of power? Will I lose all my data or something? Is there a program or something that will detect AC power loss and shut down the NAS?

3. I have an ipad (2012) and the HP network printer I have does not support AirPrint, but I read that synology does support AirPrint in a print server. So once it is connected, will I be able to push print from my ipad and will the NAS push the data to my printer?

1. I run Seagate ST3000DM001 in my DS. However they are listed in the compatibility list. I would bet they will work just fine but probably just not tested by Synology so they aren't on their list.

2. The DS has UPS monitoring built in. You just connect the UPS to the DS via USB cable and then enable UPS support and it will shutdown the DS before the battery runs out. I'm not sure how long the DS waits to shutdown as I haven't had a long enough power outage and haven't really seen it documented anyplace but its suppose to shutdown automatically. I have a 2200Va UPS supporting my DS1512, 2 small servers, a router, and a switch and the UPS shows it will hold the equipment for 3+ hours so it will be very rare to ever shutdown.

3. I don't have an ipad yet but planning to get one. Your suppose to be able to print from the ipad through the DS to any printer that the DS will support. At least that's how I read it.

I've cancelled my order for those drives and going with your drive: ST3000DM001

Are you running DSM4?

I saw a post where some guy detailed a bunch of drives that had issues with write caching after upgrading to DSM4 which dramatically decreased drive performance. This drive wasnt listed but if you could report what your experience is with these drives on DSM4, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for answering my questions

I am running the latest version of DSM which is 4.0-2228. I have had no issues and my DS is very fast.
