Create Active Directory is possible?

Postby josebrites » Fri Apr 13, 2012 4:31 pm

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a NAS Synology DS212+.
I'd like to know if it is possible to remove my current server, and set NAS with Active Directory to authenticate the client computers. (create a domain in the NAS)

Is it possible?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes you can...you will need to install LDAP app from the package centre...

Some more info here:

No, Active Directory only runs on Windows Server. It is Microsoft's implementation of LDAP. For instance, it doesn't use the same default attributes for user identification that OpenLDAP (what Synology "Directory Service" (LDAP)). There are lots of other differences as well.

You also cannot join Windows machines to the Synology's Directory Service.

I'm new here and also somewhat confused too...In the Synology information it implies that by running Directory Server that the NAS can act as a Domain Server and Windows machines etc can be authenticated and logon etc. Is this not the case? (I suspect not as for a true Domain Server you also need a DNS server too???)
If I'm wrong can someone please add a tutorial as to how to get Windows XP etc Pc's to connect to the NAS running Synology Directory Server...
Or explain what the use of the Directory Server is for otherwise....

Many thanks Adrian.

The Directory Service (OpenLDAP) built into the NAS cannot be used to authenticate users on Windows machines, only Linux/OS X.

Note: Directory Server does not support Windows domain, so you are not allowed to bind your Windows PC to
Directory Server to join Windows domain.

From http://ukdl.synology.com/ftp/packages/U ... er_enu.pdf.

Yes, for Active Directory, it requires a DNS server.
