Just Set Up DS1512+ w/ RAID-0 Array - 23 MB/s? o_0

Postby Yajnavalkya » Sat May 19, 2012 6:00 am

I just got my Synology DS1512+ from Amazon and was able to set it up without issue today.

I installed 2 WD Caviar Black 2TB HDDs in RAID-0 as a "single-volume" array to serve as my 'media server' cum back up.

I started to transfer files (pictures, music, and movies/videos) from my Windows 7 x64 PC to the Synology device and it shows a constant transfer rate/speed of ~ 23 MB/s! :?

The product is advertised on Synology's website as having transfer speeds of "194.83 MB/sec Writing, 200.31 MB/sec Reading". My transfer speeds are about 1/10th of the advertised speeds! I have a Gigabit connection from my router to the Synology device. All the connections and devices seem to work fine. Why on earth is the transfer speed so slow?

Is this false advertising on the part of Synology? I am pretty ticked off that it is not performing to its advertised specs. I will return the product if I don't get a solution from Synology right away.

Can someone from Synology help get me the transfer speeds as advertised?

Hi,
I just wanted to tell You one thing i have noticed...

Copying files to one of the indexed folders is very slow,
due to indexing process.

Seems like this is Your case too...

Try to see if there is a difference if You copy the files to some other directory ..

Best regards

Hi,

Can you please tell me what you mean by "indexed folder(s)"? When I set up the 1512+, after updating the DSM to 4.0, I created a "Folder" in the control panel and just started moving many of my files to that. I then noticed that the speed is really slow.

How do I create a 'different directory' or non-indexed location to speed up the transfer?

Also, are you able to get the advertised speeds on this device? Synology claims almost 200MB/s speeds but I'm getting about 1/10th that speed which is pathetic.

Please help!

I'm having similar issues (slow xfer speeds well below spec) with the 1512+. I'm using 4 1tb WD black (64mb cache) drives. I've tried Synology raid, raid 5 and now raid 0 for testing purposes. Read/write speeds are consistent regardless of raid config. I'm using link aggregation to a compatible gigE switch with trunking properly setup and confirmed. All devices are confirming gigE connections. I've also tested with the NAS connected directly to a machine. Results are the same. Network xfer speeds from one computer to another (using a raid volume) are close to 200bm/s.

That said, I'm getting only 50-65 mb/s read from the NAS and 100-110 write. Both are well below max spec... that's problem one. But why in the world is my write twice the speed of my read? That's backwards.

Any help before I return this unit and move onto something faster much appreciated!
