Question regarding Synology Hybrid RAID Volumes

From reading this document my understanding is that Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) is able to provide more usable space than RAID 5 when the disks are varying sizes because it uses the empty space that normal RAID 5 would use to create additional chunks of space

My question regards these additional chunks of space. In the case where only two disks have available space, does it use RAID 1 to create a new volume? In the case where three of the four disks have additional space does it use RAID 5 to create a new volume?

And most importantly - does it then concatonate all these volumes together to create a single large area of space or do I have to have multiple partitions with storage segregated into different areas?

Yes with 2 HD left it creates a RAID1 with more than 2 a RAID5 (SHR 1). But you wont recognize it and dont have to care about it as it will appear as one large volume.

by "2 HD left" do you mean "space left on 2 HD?"
