DS1812+ Noisier than advertised?

Postby sjacob » Sun Apr 01, 2012 2:41 am

Title says it all.

I'm a bit amazed how loud it is.

Is is only my box? Or do you agree?

In any case, I want to make it right.

Any 1812+ owners care to chime in on the noise level? I'm considering the 1512+ and 1812+ to put in an office environment and definitely don't want a loud beast -- that is, a loud chassis without any drive chatter. Thanks.

It's fine in my home rack cabinet with a plexiglass door, no worries.

But it's annoying if you put it next to your monitor

If you've got a an office that's pretty big, this will do fine I think, in your house on your desk when the kids are asleep you'll hear it.

It's not "server room loud" if that's what you're afraid of.

Hope I'm making sense, I was just voicing that for 1000$, Synology could have included primo noiseless fans with high cfm.

Live in a studio apartment. DS1812+ sits on a shelf above the front door, about 5-6 meters from my bed. You can hear the hum of the fans, when the windows are closed and in the middle of the night. Otherwise it's inaudible.

sounds right.

Are the back fans the only moving part though? (I haven't pulled it apart...yet  )

Two fans in the back and that's it. But keep in mind, that disk activity adds to the noise.

There is a third fan inside the PSU (at least in my ds1812+). The psu fan is 40mm and though it is not overly loud it produces the most annoying noise. The good news is that the PSU seems to be pretty standard and thus you can replace it by a fanless one.

Does the DS1512+ also have a PSU with a fan inside?

Well said, I have the same exact sound on my 1812+, though it puzzled me at first and I thought it was one of the HDDs until I removed all drives and still heard the sound. It's really sad, cause otherwise this device is whisper silent. I don't know if its temperature related though cause I remember once powering off the unit for a day and when I powered it on it was dead silent however the next day the humming sound came back thats when I immediately removed the drives to see if it was the unit or the disks

Is it difficult to replace the PSU? Can you recommend a suitable quite PSU?

To the OP, I got my DS1812+ in the mail yesterday and I've put four 3 TB drives in it (spaced out at drive 1, 3, 5 and 7), and I've left the fan mode at the default setting (i.e. Quiet Mode).

The end result is a very quiet NAS, in fact I can barely hear it.

It might get noiser under heavy load (i.e. with the fans revving up). I am currently copying 3-4 TB worth of data onto the NAS, from three different sources - and my 1812+ hovers around 25-35% CPU. Thermal Status (in System Information widget) says 60 degrees C / 140 degrees F.

I have the same problem as the OP: new 1812+ with a very noisy high frequency PSU fan. It's a pity, since the two big fans are quietly doing their job. So I wonder why Synology did not go for a fanless PSU.

Anyone having success finding a replacement PSU (fanless) that would fit?

Lucky you - hope things are still fine. So there really NO noise coming from the PSU fan? Did you by any chance check if the PSU fan is in fact running / working? If so, than there would be still hope to get a "noise free" copy of this otherwise fine machine.

Probably a noob question, but is there any way for me to check if the PSU fan is running? Assuming this is a third fan, in addition to the two big fans at the back of the unit.

In any case, I'm not hearing any high pitched noises. When it does in fact make any audible noise at all (like when doing three simultaneous Time Machine backups + file copying + some streaming), all I hear is the low pitched thrum of the hard drives. And even that sound is pretty non-intrusive.

Put your ear right next to the left side of the unit.

When did you buy yours?

Done, and yes - there is a faint high frequency sound coming from the unit, presumably from the PSU fan. I would still consider the NAS to be very quiet, though - I had to get in close to hear it.

I bought my 1812 about 10 days ago, got it delivered on May 4th.

I am trying to get the following PSU FSP120-50GNF (or FSP150-50TNF) which should work fine for the DS1812+, but it does not seem to be available anywhere in the US.

There are two other options: 1. go with a quiet psu like the Seasonic SS-250SU (which should be near silent for the load on the DS1812). 2. go with an power brick and a dc power supply, e.g. http://www.logicsupply.com/products/powerkit150.

When I get to change the PSU I'll post my experience.
