How to install gitolite via ipkg on DSM 4.0?

Can anyone provide a detailed description on how to install gitolite on a NAS running DSM 4.0-2219? There are a couple of outdated tutorials out there that use gl-easy-install to run the gitolite setup. However, gitolite v.3 no longer uses this method.

Would be nice, if we can compile a good tutorial together.

I've put together a guide for DSM 4.0 Diskstations. I've validated this on a DS212J.

Bluevarian, thank you for the guide. Now gitolite is running on my ds212+.

I had a little problem if I try

as git user.

Error:
2012-05-31.22:31:26 die could not symlink /volume1/homes/git/gitolite/src/gitolite to /bin<<newline>> at /volume1/homes/git/gitolite/install line 71<<newline>>

My solution:

/volume1/homes/git/gitolite/install -ln $HOME/bin

That was a typo on my part. By default, gitolite will install in $HOME/bin if you don't specify a directory.
