DS1512+ Ram Upgrade

Postby briankb » Thu May 10, 2012 7:24 am

Is the memory on the DS1512+ user upgradable without voiding the 3-year warranty?

If not, do you have to purchase a DS1512+ with the 3GB memory already installed? If so what is the model number :?: so I can search on Amazon and order it.

I did use the search function and found those two posts.

I was hoping to get an official response from Synology on this issue. If not I will email them tomorrow. We have two DS211+ and I'm looking to upgrade mine to a DS1512+ with the extra memory (3gb) so I can host the Atlassian software suite and our GIT repositories. I keep my Synology box in my fireproof safe, which has power and network connection pass through. Having and keeping the 3-year warranty is more important to me than a few extra for a "synology" branded ram. But I can't find the real story anywhere on their site, wiki, or even in the forum. I was about to order a DS1512+ from Amazon when I could not find the information about upgrading the ram.

I hope Synology staff will reply to my post with an official answer.

Hi

This forum is for user's only, but some of Synology staff do pop by sometimes, but if you have a direct request I would suggest that you contact Synology right away, just to be sure to get an answer. :)

Thanks for that link. I sent them an email with my original post and a link to this one in hopes they will respond one way or another.

.
.If it voided the warranty, why would they have instructions how to do it in the user setup guide?
.
There are two DIMM sockets, one empty one on the outside of the logic board and one with a 1 GB module on the inside. Using a dental-like mirror, I found the sticker on that memory module to say warranty voided if removed or something like that. You'd probably have to remove the logic board from the stand-offs to be able to swap it from a 1 GB to a 2 GB to reach a total of 4 GB. I just put a 2 GB Crucial in the outside module for a total of 3 GB. I don't think my memory usage yet as even come close to 512 MB, but it has exceeded 256 a time or two.

Response from Synology staff via email

Thank you for your interest in the Synology DiskStation DS1512+.

It is certainly possible to add a 2GB RAM stick to the DS1512+ without voiding the warranty. There is an open slot that should be easy to get to.

While most users will never need the additional RAM, you can find the approved modules at our online storefront.
