New Synology owner with HD question

Postby ivoltage » Tue May 08, 2012 1:11 pm

I have just purchased a DS212 and a Western Digital WD30EZRX for home use. Unfortunately, I am having problems. The DS212 is running the latest version of DSM 4.0, but the WD drive is making an annoying clicking sound every few seconds. There also seems to be an unreasonable amount of disk activity.

As the unit is in my living room, I am going to return the drive and get a different one. Could anyone recommend another tried-and-tested 3TB drive. My primary concern is noise. I would like the drive to be as quiet as possible. If this is not possible with drives of this size, I would happily get two quiet 2TB drives instead.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!

We're running five 3 TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 and they're so quiet I have to get up close to hear them stepping. Search on that model number here for references to reviews/tests and other Synology owners' experiences with them.

I shall definitely look into getting one to replace the WD drive. Thanks for the suggestion :)
