Are you seriously going to downgrade to v368 (that's what, DSM 2.0)? I would strongly advice trying a more recent version, like 2.3.

Whatever happened to this topic? The firmware used to be on the first page, now it's on page three? That's not really user friendly...

I am sorry, seems that I messed up things while merging topics 2 weeks ago.

Thanks HarryPotter!

Vaako, do you have any services running which may cause disk activity? Something like SABnzdb polling for download tasks every few minutes, a connection from outside your network via DDNS, ...

Nope, i have nothing running.
The CS-406e is only for NetBackup and schedule is set only at night.
Mmm strange, how do i determine what services are running?

I guess via SSH but i dont now any commands for that!?

Hello,

I am following this forum since a while and I followed the links and instructions to upgrade my CS406 to DSM3.1 1635 :D

Unfortunately, I am facing problems since this update.
The CS completely freezes after unpredictable time -after 5 min to 2 hours.
The CS is totally blocked then, no access via web, to reaction on reset or on/off-button, its like in coma.

Only help is to pull the power cable.
The units starts up after reconnection, runs normally a while and then freezes again.

Can help me to resolve this situation ?
Thnx.

Well you could try to reset to defaults and re-flash the unit and see whats happend.
Otherwise I advice to downgrade again to a previous firmware!

I'd open it up and see if it's getting too hot or maybe the power supply is going bad.

I have found this thread by chance and followed it since long time. Fortunately. Because the good work of Alfredo made my old CS-406e survive (many BIG thanks to you Alfredo). This old little machine serves my for backups, as FTP server and since the use of Alfredo's fine work as own mail server too. In the moment the machine is equipped with 4 WD500AAKS, but they are nearly full now. So I need to switch to bigger sizes. I have read here, that the version 1635 supports also 4 x 2GB hard disks. As model someone named here the WD20EARS from Western Digital. Has someone made any experience with the new Western Digital WD20EARX?

Hello,

I posted my problem with the freezing CS406 in Feb/12 and got some helpfull feedback from you on what to do.

I finally detected, that the NAS freeze is triggered through my Sonos Music System.
Each time I start an actualisation of the music library via Sonsos Controller (and LAN), the NAS fully freezes and requires "abnormal" shutdown.

This is what I did around the NAS:
- temperatures remain stable
- I replaced the power suplly connector.
- I replaced my 2 HDs
- new installation with firmware (MD5 Checksumm of Firmware is ok)

Last item I can not controll:
- 3rd prg´s installed on the first firmware and than updated too the 1635 ?
I had a 3rd party squeezebox sw installed and removed 2 years ago.
How can I check if this is still installed and the cause ?

I would like to reset to defaults and re-flash the unit.
Can someone tell/link me to a "how to" without putting my music 1 TB library at risk ?

Thnx.

@Alfredo: Hello Sir,

Do you know if the 1635 firmware for CS406 is also compatible for the RS406?

Thanks!

Hey aftershocks

They're not right now, since there was no request for it. However, I could probably create one if you'd like. I don't own that model myself though, so there's no way for me to test it. If that doesn't bother you, let me know and I'll create the firmware for you (you'll need 2.3 as an intermediary to upgrade). :-)

@KhunMick - Sorry, no experience with those drives. However, the general rule of thumb is that if they are 5x00 rpm drives, they will work with regard to power consumption. Just make sure you enable TLER!

@msc0508 - If you use Synology Assistant to install firmware, it will tell you whether or not the drives will be formatted.

@Alfredo:

Yes please! :D I can try it and see, however the latest firmware that I have and is available is 2.0.0731... i don't think there is a v2.3 for the RS-406 :(

Would this be a problem?

No, I would provide that one as well (or 2.1 or 2.2, not sure yet). I'd need to find a solution for my hosting though, I think I'm running out of space with all the firmwares I have uploaded.

Just give me a bit of time, I'm currently trying to get DSM 4.0 to work. I know I said DSM 3.1 would be the final update, but I may have found a way to upgrade after all. No promises though, there's a bit more work involved.

EDIT - Actually, before I make any promises, let me check if getting 3.1 to run on the RS406 is even possible.
EDIT 2 - Looks like it should be possible. :)
