Remote connection

Postby bonebreaker777 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 6:57 pm

I know, I know, we had it here many items, but still, I can't find where I am going wrong.
NAS: Synology DNS 212j, DSM 4.0-2198
Router: TP-LINK TL-WR741N firmware v.: 1.0/2.0

Ports forwarded in DS212j OR the router for flawless functions like BT, DSM Update, DDNS or NTP:
NONE (until now I thought at least the ports were necessary for BT to work)

DS212j DSM > Control Panel > Router Configuration > Empty
Image

TL-WR741N > Forwarding > Virtual Servers > Empty
Image

DDNS: Hostname registered
DS212j DSM > Control Panel > ezCloud > Status : Normal (using same DDNS details)

Image

TL-WR741N > Dynamic DNS > Connection Status : Succeeded! (using same DDNS details)

Image

My questions are:
What ports to forward where to enable remote WebDAV HTTPS connection successfully (lets assume I would like to connect remotely to my DS212j trough HTTPS port 5006)?

Does the DDNS on the router must be logged in for a successful remote connection to the DS212j or the DDNS connection on the DS212j is enough without the router DDNS connected?

The DDNS set up on your router or DS is only to allow either of them to login and update your public IP with your DDNS service provider. It is not necessary to be "Logged In" to your DDNS provider for remote access to work. Regardless of your DDNS setup, if you've setup your port forwarding and everything else correctly, you should be able to manually type your public IP address into the address bar of a browser located OUTSIDE your local network followed by the port number of the service you want to access, eg. :5000 to access the DSM or :7000 to access the File Station. eg. http://10.50.5.60:5000 where 10.50.5.60 is replaced by your own public IP.

Port forwarding is NOT required for access from within your local network.

I assume also that you've enabled your account application privileges to allow access to webDAV.

If the above doesn't help, maybe try using http instead on port 5005 in case https is in some way causing the problem.

-Automatic redirection HTTP connection to HTTPS - turned off
-WebDAV HTTP and HTTPS, ports 5005 and 5006 - enabled
-DSM for HTTP and HTTPS ports 5000 & 5001 - enabled
-Forwarded ports on router 5000,5001,5005,5006 - enabled

Tried to connect to the DS outside my network using the address form http://external_IP:portNo
Regardless what outside source I used, I just could not connect. Tried all enabled ports.
Any further ideas, if you wouldn't mind?

P.S.: Is there a reason why I can't use the WebDAV service while on my home network? Just an idea
(I tried to log into my DS while typing it's address and ports for the WebDAV service but just and error page jumps up).

Can you ping your public IP and get a response. You can ping from network-tools.com. Note that you might need to enable your router to reply to a ping request from WAN.

Also double check that your ports are open.

Well you could be onto something here, cause I had the "Ignore WAN ping" enabled on my router.
Will try on and report back how did it go. Thanks

EDIT: did try network-tools, I could ping my external IP from both my laptop and from a smartphone without connected to my network. Still, I can't establish any connection to my network from the outside.

Ignore Ping Packet From WAN Port - disabled on my router
Forbid Ping Packet From LAN Port - disabled on my router

I pass...

New Update

Purchased a router from the Supported Router List for Synology products.
My previous router was from TP-Link, and I was quite satisfied so I choose again from TP-Link.
TL-WR841N 300Mbs router supported by Synology.
Now. My Router is working fine. I can access it remotely trough a custom port number (unused by anything else in my network). Both by using my DDNS address or just my external IP address
- http://_no-ip.org_address:custom_port > Success accessing router remotely!
- http://_external_IP_address:custom_port > Success accessing router remotely!

Regardless what I do Synology somehow can't establish a connection to the router for port forwarding purposes. By using EZ-Internet Wizzard (done it for now 23x times) I was asked only once for the log in details to my router(what is logical one would assume). Can't establish remote connection to any of the Synology services, either WebDAV, HTTP or HTTPS connection, Download Station or File Station.
Any help?

I can not access the selected port

Postby pepefe » Sat Apr 28, 2012 3:56 pm

Hi.

I have a DS212J and took 3 days trying to port forwarding without success. The DS is connected either to the Internet (download torrent performed without problems) and has no problem on the LAN (I access it from Windows Explorer) but can not get port forwarding to work. When I access it via telnet (port 23), ftp (21) or from the Web (5000), I access directly to the router, never do I access the selected port. Furthermore, by creating port forwarding rules, when I test the connection to the corresponding button, I always respond with 'Fail'. My router is a COMTREND 5813. Please can anyone help me solve the problem?
Thank you very much.

Sorry for my English.

Firstly, enabling your router to respond to a WAN ping was only intended to be temporary. You don't want to leave it enabled.

Re remote access, if I understand you correctly, you can access the DS remotely as long as you use an alternate port to the standard port config. So what port are you having success with if not 5000 for example?

Also, in your user privileges setup for application privileges, have you checked the appropriate boxes, eg. webdav, file station etc.

Sorted, thanks.

Not sure if you are answering my question/post or the other users. I think the other user means he can access his NAS on LAN via TelNet, FTP or Web (ports 23, 21 and 5000). But no remote access outside his LAN, via WAN. Which is the same problem I have. Today I tested my laptop for external access, no problem. Only my NAS is fighting against external control. Tried manual port forwarding(as per http://portforward.com/ to make sure I did everything as it should be), EZ-Internet, no luck so far. I would say something on my NAS is preventing it...Not sure what yet, cause I can both access my router or my laptop.

Again not sure which user should react to this, but I just use my admin account until I sort the remote control out, so user privileges are not a issue. Privileges should be not the issue if you can't even get a response from a address, should they?

Reinstalling a new DSM on a new HDD(empty). Too bad you just can't restore settings without formatting the HDDs. Will report later how did I do. Will see if I can get the remote connection work without any extra settings.

Most interesting news!

Removed my current 2x HDDs from the DS212j, inserted an unused HDD and installed a new DSM 4.0. Sorted all the basic settings, everything was working fine, I was able to access the DSM from my girl friends iPhone. So I installed back the previous original 2x HDDs. And now the remote access is working! So a suggestion. Try to remove and insert back the HDDs?!?
