207+ 2TB Raid HDD recommendation?

Postby mattei007 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:57 am

Hi All

After 3.5 years in action I've had a HDD die on me in the 207+.
I am wanting to replace BOTH harddrives in the NAS and start fresh. They are currently running independently, no RAID.

Can anyone recommend a 2TB HDD that will support raid and this box? I'm wanting it if one HDD dies, pull it out and put a new one in and have data replicated back. I forget the RAID (0 or 1) type that is.

Thanks!
Matt

Ive had good experience with the Seagate Barracuda Greens (ST2000DL003). Used about 10 of these accross different Synology setups and they are fast, reliable, and quiet.

I actually think they are discontinued now, and Seagate has a new 'Green' drive.

Stay away from WD green drives if you will put them in any RAID setup as they cause problems - search on the forums here for more info if you need.

Thanks

Seems I can still get those Seagate Barracuda Greens you have used before, may as well use them then!
Not really mission critical data but it's a pain having lost one HDD with bits and pieces that will be hard to find again.

So the ST2000DL003's will be fine to run in Raid? I'll set that up using the 'Quick Start' Synology wizard as I haven't done it before.

Yep, ive currently got them running in several systems, some in raid 0, some in raid 1. Longest performing ones have been going 6+ months without any dramas.

OK so I have the two HDDs in there and have gotten to this stage. Link to storage manager image

Does this mean if 1 drive dies, I replace it and it 'initialises' that disk and keeps going on it's merry way with no data loss? It doesn't say Raid1 but I assume it works the same way?

Hi,
Yep - SHR is actually just Raid 1 in your configuration, so if a disk failed you'd just replace it with ideally the same disk, or a disk of same or greater size and it will re-initialise.

Legend. I'm testing it by removing a drive, changing data and re-initialising it (paranoid me).
I would +1 you but cannot find a way to!

Thanks again for all your help :D
