Which diskstation for plex media server ?

Hi,
I would like to buy a Synology NAS and run the plex server.
I saw the DS411 is compatible with PMS.

My plex client are iphone, ipad and pc client.
Maybe, during holidays, I will use ipad in wifi connection.

Is DS411 will be enough ?

There is no PMS for DS411 yet (see PMS for ARM). And even if there was, the DS411 can't handle transcoding, it's processor is just too weak.

You need at least a DS710+/DS712+ with Intel (single-core) processor to be able to transcode, but I strongly recommend a dual-core (see here for CPU info). And even with a dual-core Intel Atom processor, I can't promise that it will be able to transcode everything without stuttering. Please surf the plex forum for that kind of info.

Ok, we have a Desktop client (Leika), which is no problem for the PMS, because the desktop clients for Win/OSX/Linux play 99% of the video formats (in my experience) -> I would go with the DS712+ or wait until the ARM version is ready (no ETA) and go with a ARM CPU.

But then we have Apple mobile clients (iPad, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, etc.) - aka Worst Case for the PMS, because it has to transcode almost everything, unless you already have all your videos in the Apple specific format (H264 with the right bitrates with 2 channel AAC, in an m4v/mov/mp4 NOT MKV)
-> I really can't tell if a DS712+ would be enough. Please search or ask in the plex forums. I would guess NO, but it depends on the input/ouptut bitrate and resolution. If you want to transcode to iPhone and iPad at the same time, there might a chance that even a dual-core Atom CPU is not enough, but again: it depends on the input/output bitrate and resolution.

Actually I use an imac like server. There is no problem for to whatch movies.
But I don't know if transcoding is runing.
This evening, I will check the cpu's load when ipad and iphone play movie. Just for make miself an idea.
That I didn't understood too, it's if transcoding is always needed for ios player.

I have a DS1812+ running PMS, clients are 3x MacBook Pro's, a Mac Mini and 2xiPhones, streaming HD content is not a problem, only time it ever stutters is when SABnzbd is unpacking files.
