Time Machine unreliable with DSM 3.2 (all versions)

Postby pauldoo » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:19 pm

Hi,
With all versions of DSM 3.2 (currently on 3.2-1955, but I have tried all previous 3.2-x versions), I have problems with Time Machine reliability. It appears to work correctly usually for a few weeks, but then I get a message stating:

Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. This could take several hours.

Click Back Up Later to be reminded tomorrow. Time Machine won't perform backups during this time.

If I click "Start New Backup", Time Machine will take a long while making a fresh backup and appears to work correctly again; but always the message returns after a few weeks.

I have two laptops and both worked perfectly with Time Machine when I was using DSM 3.1. I was forced to upgrade to DSM 3.2 only after I upgraded one of these laptops to OS X Lion. This problem now occurs on both of my laptops, one running OS X 10.7.2, the other OS X 10.6.8.

I have seen a couple of forum threads on this subject already but with no resolution:

This issue gives me very little confidence in the reliability of my backups, and I hope that Synology can provide us with a fix. I am using a Synology DS110j with DSM 3.2-1955.

Hi,
I completely went away from TM. I tried to use with several NAS for years and it is IMHO not reliable at all. I dont really think that this is an Synology issue. Even if an image gets corrupt there should be an option to repair these images or at least recover some data. I found out last week that TM was not backing up any user data from other users on my Macbook. I switched to CCC to do my backups and that seems to work reliable.

You might be right, but I found Time Machine to be perfectly reliable with DSM 3.1. Even if Time Machine in general isn't a perfect technology, I strongly suspect that DSM 3.2 adds further problems.

This issue is driving me crazy. Time Machine worked flawlessly with my DS410 for more than a year. Since Lion and DSM 3.2, I'm having to recreate back-ups almost every week - a total pain since there are 5 Mac in the house. Not sure what the problem is, but really hope there's some kind of resolution soon.

I have started a new topic on this issue with some info I have received from synology support:
