WAV file has audio clicks after transferring into DS 212j

Postby dongggoi » Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:53 am

Hi there,

After transferring audio (wav) files into the server, when we play them from the server, there are audible clicks in the file. When we transfer them out to a local computer, the clicks are still there. The original files do not have any clicks at all.

Please let me know if this is a known problem and if there is a fix for this. We are an audio post production facility and we need the server to store wav files without corrupting it.

Thanks

Are Jumbo Frames enabled?

Which DSM version do you have installed? Have you tried upgrading to the latest one?

Do you encounter the same issue with FLAC, MP3, etc.?

An out-there question ; have you tried upgrading your router's firmware and/or trying another router altogether for testing purposes?

Hi Strat,

The DSM is version 3.2. I think this is the latest version. The problem doesn't happen with mp3s. I don't have any flac files so I have not tried that. The router is a D Link DIR 615. We have never had this problem before with our old server, which was a computer with server software installed.

I have actually contacted the support team of Synology and they responded once asking me to send an example of the wav file with the problem and I have not heard from them since. It has been about 3 to 4 days. I really hope that this can be resolved. I have checked the web for any similar problems and solutions but without success. It is imperative that the server work with wav files properly as we are an audio production facility. We cannot afford to have a server adding artifacts to the audio files.

Thanks

I understand, but I already suggested things for you to try and you haven't tried any of them.

I know you're not in IT so it's a normal reaction to say "It worked before," but insisting on this instead of trying things doesn't help anybody narrow the potential causes for this problem down.

Also, can you take a WAV file, change it's extension manually to anything at all (can be .ABC for all it matters) and transfer it to the NAS just to see if it gets corrupted then too?

So again, to drive my point home, here's a list of things of things for you to try ;

- Try FLAC files (encoding in FLAC is easy as can be)
- Rename a WAV file to something else & check its integrity after it was transferred.
- Are Jumbo Frames enabled on your NAS or not?
- Try another router.
- Also, you could try the DSM 4.0 beta that's out, although be forewarned that you can't roll back to 3.2.

That's a pretty big list of things to try that can potentially fix the issue for you.

Good luck.

I have tried your suggestions with the following results:

transfer of FLAC files -- no problems (but now files in general are not transferring fully)

Renaming WAV files -- after transferring and changing it back to WAV, 4 seconds of the file has been cut off.

Jumbo frames is disabled

Tried 2 different routers -- same problems -- clicks in the WAV files

New problem -- now transfers stop halfway. LAN cable and with different routers also result in this problem.

Although I may not be in the IT department, the fact still remains that the server does not work as it is supposed to. I would appreciate it if you and your team can assess the results and come up with a solution or at least deem this unit to be defective so that I can initiate exchange proceedings.

Thanks

Team? I'm just some guy throwing suggestion your way so maybe you can find out the cause quicker! ;)

Have you tried transferring files wirelessly? Just curious to see if you're experiencing the problem even then.

You haven't tested with Jumbo Frames enabled, so that's something else that could be tested.

If both of these suggestions don't pan out for you, I'm fresh out of ideas and will therefore wish you luck in finding a solution with or without Synology's help.

I have the same problem. I transferred WAV files to a DS411j. During the day I did some video editing that used them. When I came back this morning the files had been completely corrupted and were unplayable. Bringing them back onto my Mac didn't solve anything. Weirdly the file size has stayed normal - 50-80Mb. But they 'play' in less than a second. Has anyone else had this problem or better yet - a solution?
