FileStation - Folder/Directory Names

Postby DavidDeb » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:59 pm

Resolution??? : Problem has not reoccured for a while ...

Hello all,

My question to this group is concerned with the use of uploading to the DS via FileStation (:7000).

After uploading data from a Win7 and a WinXP box I noticed - after very long upload times from various sources to consolidate my data - that many folders had been 'duplicated'. The one has the name 'Folder#1' and the next 'folder#1' ... all good and legal for Macs and *NIX, but not for WinDoze!
Why is this happening? Anyone with an explanation AND a way to stop this happpening?

BTW: all of the source folders uploaded have the same 'case', all my folders start with a capital letter.

Thanks for your attention and (hopfully) assistance and suggestions.

Brgds,

David D.

** [EDIT]:
Since this is obviously NOT a figment of my imagination, I have removed the [RESOLVED] flag ... hopefully the Synology Team will now pick up the ball and start investigating this (again)

Synology Copy changed upper/lower case folder names

Postby crjw » Sun Apr 10, 2011 4:58 pm

I have a bunch of music folders and when I did a copy using the Synology folder copy function it changed the folders it copied to "Folder Name" from "folder name" now I have several thousand duplicate folders except for the case of the name. Worse I can't find any way to merge the folders and delete the extra folder. Using windows command line and the various tools I have found the folder names are not regarded as unique by windows command prompt. So although I can change the folder names one at a time in the GUI it takes forever and worse, depending if I use the Synology copy, windows gui copy or the command prompt xcopy I may or may not end up with massive numbers of duplicate folders. What makes this worse is that depending on the windows function or program you are using the second folder may or may not be seen as unique meaning functions that try to access files in "Led Zep\stairway to heaven" may or may not fail depending on if I have a "led zep\" folder as well.

This is a major data corruption pain in the neck. Does anybody have any suggestions for how to fix this? Is this something Synology is ever going to fix? Looking over the forum it's clear that case sensitivity has been and continues to be handled in a non-standard kinda Linux kinda Windows kinda OSX sort of way for a long time.

I'm having a similar issue, and it's causing problems with iTunes. Is there a way to simply make it so my DS411j won't do this? It should treat the two dupes in this picture as ONE folder.

There must be some special reason for this! I have copied/moved several folder (some with small startletter and some with great startletter) from my Win7-PC to both DS509+ as well as DS212+ and there was no change of the names!

Yeah, I don't know. I was trying to use my DS411j as my primary iTunes store, but kept having continual issues with this naming structure thing. So, I gave up. My DS is now serving as the location for my Time Machine backups, with my iTunes store staying on a separate 3GB Western Digital FireWire 800 drive.
