DS211j, No music service from USB-stick

Postby robernd » Thu Apr 05, 2012 9:30 am

Hi,
I stored my music on an USB-stick (64GB) and used the Mediaserver to transmit it to Digital Media Adapters (DMA). Using DSM 3.0 this methode worked well. The USB was configurated as music folder, and the DMAs had access to the fils of the USB-stick and to the I-Tunes smart play list.

After update to DSM 4.0 there is no access to the the music files on USB. The USB folder music appears in the list of shared folders as USB device. But it does not appear in the list of indexed folders. Probably this is the reason why the DMAs do only display empty folders and play lists. Sometimes the list of indexed folders shows the USB-stick as folder with the name 'usbshare', but marks it as not existing folder. It is not possible to rename or introduce a folder to/of the name 'music' or 'usbshare' because these are system names.

The access to the music files is ok if I create the folder 'music' on the hard disks. But I like to keep it on USB because the disks stop spinning if I play music from USB for a long time.

Has anyone an idea how to install the media server with I-tune smart play lists on the USB-stick? Exists any way for downgrade to DSM 3.0?

Hi,
my problem is obviously well known (no music service by DS-211j from USB-Stick), because the USB-Station 2 is running unter DSM 3 and not under DSM 4. This USB-Station is a NAS conroller for external USB-Drives. Therefore the USB-Station must serve also music from USB (as DS-211j did under DSM 3).
When DSM 4 is available for the USB-Station this version of firmware will probably service music from USB also by DS-211j.

I don't think that is the issue, I can't get any USB devices to show up for media locations. Im about ready for a return. I've had it for 2 days. Backups fail and I can't stream from USB. My router can stream from USB but my nas can't? I'm not putting up with that. The nas should be expandable from USB and its not at all.

Ya So support responded. You have to SSH in and add a symbolic link. But here is the problem I am facing with the ds212+ if I have 2 usbs plugged into the back usbshare1 and usbshare2 then plug in a usb on the front, ssh in and create a symbolic link then restart the nas my usb drives rearrange. They have not responded to this issue yet. It doesnt seem like they will.
Media indexing does not recgonize either of my USB drives. So its not letting me index the music backed up on my USB drive. is my only choice to go into SSH and add a symbolic link to the mount in the music folder? Will that even work?

How would I get a USB to mount in the same place everytime anyway. It comes up diffrent every time now anyway.

Thanks for writing us. If you want this to work, you will need to create a symbolic link to the mount. Otherwise you should just have your music on the DiskStation itself in the music folder.

Warm Regards,

Michael
