Multiple Macs on LAN issue

Postby jfhjfh » Sun Apr 08, 2012 6:13 pm

Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else - I searched for various things, but couldn't find any previous answers and I'm a complete rookie.

We have two Macs on our wireless network - an older one (though running Snow Leopard) and another a couple of years old also running Snow Leopard. I have installed the Synology s/w on the newer one, but want the older to also be able to access the Diskstation folders.

What configurations do I need to make to the Diskstation control panel to enable this?
Or do I have to install the s/w on the older Mac too?

Any help gratefully received - you may need to spell things out for me!

Many thanks.

Hi

You don't have to change anything on your DS, other create a new user for TM backup.

If the new MAC can see the DS, then the old MAC should see it as well, and you can set it up the same way, just using another username.

It's always good to install the SA, on the other MAC.

I'm not sure the previous poster has answered your question, but if he has, then please forgive me.

Once you've got your DS setup, you can access it from either of your Macs. Most functions can be managed via a web browser, so you can launch one on either of your Mac's, log in to the IP address of your DS, and set up, and changes settings as you like.

One thing you'll set up is a "Share" an area where you want to store files. So let's say you set up a share called Music.

The next step is to create "Users". You can create as many or as few as you like. Say you create a user called "Me", and grant it access to the share "Music".

From either of your computers, you can log into your DS (Connect To Server, enter the IP address)...You'll be asked for a username and password. Enter "Me" as the user, and whatever password you've setup for that user. The share "Music" will now appear on your desktop. You can copy files from your Mac to this folder, and from this folder to your Mac. You can log in as "Me" to your DS from both of your Mac's at the same time if you wish.

Hope this helps.
