I had spikes with the 2GB module but after removed it, the LAN monitor was back to "normal" (not constant but no drop under 50 GB/s with FTP)

I removed the 2GB RAM module just now. The RAM that I wass using was Kingston 2GB PC3-8500 CL7. :?

The entire system becomes very responsive after the removal including faster boot-up time, faster transfer speed, faster opening photo station, lower CPU usage, etc. :D

I believe the problem was due to a bug in the over-1GB RAM management in DSM4.0 instead of incompatible RAM module. Synology software team, do you hear our voice? 8)

It will be a good news if the problem is software related, I wouldn't have to trash my 2GB module ;)

But some people in the hardware compatibility thread seems to have no problem at all with 3GB and even 4GB (by replacing the original 1GB module)...

What drives are you using? To test I replaced Samsung HD204UI drives by Seagate 7200rpm drives and spikes are gone.

If it was a hardware compatibility issue, the system would not boot up at all. We should ask those users if they notice any performance drop after the RAM upgrade, not just successful boot up and use of DS1812+!

BTW, does anybody knows what type of RAM module that Synology used in it's own first RAM slot?

I use 3x Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN1 with SHR-1.

The original ram that Synology 1812+ is using is Hynix chips. Read from Taiwan website that the use of 1GB+2GB has created some performance issue in transfer speed and thumbnail creation. So they just took out the original 1GB ram and replace one 4GB Hynix chip ram. The transfer speed then drops from 90~100MB/s to 85~90MB/s. But its performance is still much better than 1GB+2GB. Weird! :?:

I hope someone with the real $100 synology memory upgrade can post here and tell us about potential performance drop. Maybe I will buy another 2GB module and change the original one.

But I don't really want to break the warranty...

Hi Guys - I've also had this problem on my DS1812+ since upgrading to DSM 4.0. Unlike a few posters here i only have the single gig of memory in my system but my transfer speeds while writing to the DS got as low as 5.6MB/s on a 5GB single file.

However, I turned IPv6 off on the DS and it shot back up to approx. 73MB/s on multiple tests. I'm curious if any of you have tried doing this during your troubleshooting process' and if it has worked or not?

Hi everyone
I just bought a DS1512+ with a 2GB memory module from synology and installed dsm 4.0-2198.
I am now experience low performance and high cpu usage. Everything is slow in dsm and cpu usage reaches 80-90% if i sneeze. The DS doesn't feel like a $1000 NAS at all.
Right now i am memory testing my DS with synology assistant and if it comes out clean i will try and remove the module and see if that helps. At least I hope it's just the mem module or a SW issue.

@th3m0r0n : I don't know if IPv6 is activated by default in DSM, I didn't modify anything in IPv6 settings but I will try it for sure.

@dodge : thx for your input, it's sound very interesting as it can be a software problem which maybe should be fixed soon. I didn't try the official memory tester from DS Assistant but I will try it as soon as possible.

I will write a post as soon as I know more. The mem testing will take its time. It's now 28% after 2 hours. :)

IPv6 is set to "AUTO" by default in DS1812+
I tried to disable IPv6 then I found no help at all for improving data transfer speed.
When copying large files, the average speed still goes around 80MB/s
I gotta admit that I'm extremely disappointed in those numbers because the over 100MB/s (advertised speeds) was the only reason I bought DS1812+ in the first place.

Test Environment:
DS1812+: Hitachi 7K3000 1.5TB x 8 (RAID 6) @ EXT4, Link Aggregation (HP ProCurve 1810g-8)
PC: Intel i7-2600K @ ASUS P8Z68-V DELUXE, DDR3 1600 2G x 6, Seagate ST3500413AS x 6 (RAID 5+0) @ DELL H700
Synology DS1812+ (1GB RAM, DSM4.0-2198) 1.5TBx8 RAID6 w/ DX510 2TBx5 RAID5
Link Aggregation, HP Procurve 1810G-8 Switch

With IPv6 set to AUTO and no memory module upgrade my transfert speed between my PC and the 1812+ is around 100 / 110 MB/s. I just disabled IPv6 and I will add the memory module but i doubt it will change anything.

Specs : PC has a SSD, Switch is a 1Gbits netgear WNDR3700 router (no link aggregation) and the 1812 has 3x3TB seagate new drives

To mpnico:
The memory test came out ok. Or at least I did not get anny error messages. So I take it that no news is good news.
I then removed the 2GB memory module from my DS(for the record this is a synology memory module).
Now my DS is responding the way I would expect it to, considering the hardware in this thing.
Idle state cpu usage 1-2%, memory usage 10%.
I also had a file transfer improvement.
I'm no expert here, but this sounds to me like a software issue, right?
Any thoughts?
