- I used virtualbox but I assume it should work the same with VMWare.
- Create a VM with 512Mb ram and approx 12 GB Disk.
- Download and install Slackware A,AP,D,K,N and L packages on the 4th partition and 2nd partition swap
- Partition 1 2GB
- Partition 2,1GB
- Partition 3,4GB
- Partition 4,the rest for the full Slackware install with Dev tools
- Go to: hxxp://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.ph ... y_NAS_have
- Find an Intel based model and download its DSM firmware
- format the 1st (root disk) and 3rd (volume1) partition as ext3
- rename the firmware pat file to zip
- unzip hda.tgz to the first partition
- browse thru the /etc and modify all you think needs modification ie rename dha to sda and edit /etc/synoinfo.conf
- rename the shutdown command since it will do a shutdown after boot
- boot with your Slackware kernel from the first partition /dev/hda1 using lilo
- logon with admin and set a password which will be the root password
- I never finished my custom 2.6.32.12 kernel so all Synology modules can load
The GUI and everything worked fine but I could not get the diskmanager to work properly, I think that was because most of the Synology kernel modules failed to load because I had the wrong kernel version.
After spending a couple of nights I liked the system and bought a real Synology diskstation, saving me a lot of time messing around on something I would never use. I'm very happy with the 4.0 software.
