date & time resets on power off

Postby Radar_Lover » Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:48 am

My DS710+ has recently started resetting the date to 01/01/2002 when it is powered on after I turn it off overnight. Can anyone suggest what is wrong and how to fix it? I don't want to leave it on overnight due to lightning this time of year.

I have it set to update the date and time automatically from an NTP server but this can only be set no more frequently than daily and apparently it does it at midnight which is no good as the NAS is off then.

Is it possible to somehow force it to check the NTP server on boot up or more frequently during the day (maybe with editing a config file)?

Thanks.

I had a similar issue, when the NAS shutdown it forgot the time.

I've just send in a reply, it still has to be approved by Synology, so give it a little time:

My problem was the battery of the NAS motherboard. It didn't work, so the NAS forgot the time when it shutdown. I returned it to the store for a new NAS.

Hope this might help.

Hello krikkevw, thank you for the reply!

I have a suspicion that my problem may also be caused by the battery on the motherboard. Is there a way to test the battery?

I see you had to get a new NAS, is the battery non-replaceable then?

I am glad you have got your problem fixed though.

Well I have got around the problem for the time being by editing the crontab file on the NAS and adding:

Code: Select all
@reboot                                 root    /usr/sbin/ntpdate -b time.asia.apple.com

Which forces it to update the time and date from an ntp server at startup.
