I'm wondering a lot of the same questions. I see the tech differences in the models, but I wonder what real-world performance differences exist. I don't mind spending for the 710+ (to get the option to pop a DX510 in later) or the 212+ or 212. The 7xx also offers the option to dual-home the box, which would be nice for absolute speed, but without some experience or some charts, I'm not really sure how much I'm buying myself.
I've got a PS3 plus 3 PC's that will connect to it. I plan on running iTunes through a set of AirPlay enabled speakers. I probably, today, won't be streaming video over it, but that could certainly change and I want a box that will grow with my needs. $300 for the 212 or $180 more for the 710+? The extra $180 is not much now to give some headroom - but will I even use what the 212 offers? I saw another post that did some real-world checks of cpu/network and doing what I plan to be doing wasn't even taxing the 212. So am I spending more for just that 'bragging right' of having the next model up?
At most, in reality, I'd be doing something like browsing the photos on the Synology (using lightroom on my pc) while listening to iTunes and, under some specific circumstances, perhaps backing up one of the other pc's at the same time. Should the 212 suffice?
I'm backing up the selected Synology to a WD 3tb USB3 external drive. Currently, 2x3tb Seagates are going in the box itself.
I'm probably just going to end up ordering the 212+, but for $130 more, the 7series offers the dual nics and double the ram! Darn these choices!
Is there some criteria to plug into the situation to give an answer? Sorry for the long post...
