1812+ works with 4TB Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000

Postby sky-chicken » Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:13 am

I received my 1812+ today and was very nervous about the seven 4TB Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000 I was going to use. I tried Netgear before and the unit destroyed the RAID volume when shutting down the unite (mayor bug) After that I tried the DROBO box and this unit was very easy to setup and price was OK but maximum speed was around 20 MB/sec at best (called customer support and they told me this is correct (wonder what the GigE0 suppose to do on the DROBO)

And now I switched to Synology and what a difference! Works right out of the box, easy to setup and takes everything you through at it (4TB Hitachi)! Way to go Synology! Very happy 1812+ customer :-)

Could you post through throughput speeds on the new unit? Thanks

You have to consider that I only have 2 slow 5000 RPM 4TB drives and both drives "synchronizing" right now. I also use the copy and paste function in DSM 3.2 so nothing is optimized.
With all this I have a constant 75MB/sec for the last 4 hours.

I have now 7 drives HDS5C4040 and the transfer rate increases to 120MB/sec from my i7 pc running windows 7/64 (same HDD) to a 3COM 4500 Giga switch connected to the DS1812+.
I did not do any fine tuning (all default on the Synology, PC and 3Com switch.
Very happy with my NAS. The unit came with DSM 3.2 installed and I noticed I could not add disc number 6 to the volume. DSM 3.2 storage manager only gave me the option to remove but not manage the volume. The same day DSM 4 was released and I installed and here we go ... I could increase the volume and have disc 7 now in and on my way to increase to over 22 TB.
