[Resolved] Orange Status LED flashing after a simple reboot

Postby profox » Thu Mar 08, 2012 10:07 pm

Hi All,

After searching for some moments, I decided to post my problem. I found some cases quite similar too mine, but no answer were given. Maybe Synology can help.
Here is the story :
  • My DS1010+ was perfectly running well for 2 years now. The latest firmware was always installed, just before v4 of DMS.
  • 3 days ago, I decided to reboot my DS1010+ before upgrading to DSM 4. From the web interface, i launched the reboot.
  • Since the NAS rebooted, the status LED keeps flashing orange...
  • I decided to use the latest Synology Assistant to upgrade it anyway. The Assistant sees my NAS : it says that my NAS is "can be migrated" (My NAS is in french...), what does it mean ? By the way, Assitant tells me that DSM 4.0.2198 is installed...
  • Anyway, I try to upgrade to DSM 4.0.2197 (and 2198 today). LAN configuration goes OK, NO system partition format, NO data partition format, DSM files copy seems to be OK, reboot...
  • And then, the status LED keep flashing orange. Assistant says that the installation is successful, but even if I can ping the NAS, I have no access to any web interface or telnet port.
  • So I tried to reset the NAS : First 4 seconds on reset button, first beep, then I press a second time the reset button until I ear another single beep, no 3 beeps. And the NAS doesn't reboot... The reset doesn't seems to work.

Whatever I do, the status LED keeps flashing orange and the fans make noise turning very fast.

So my question is : what to do ? I had 2 times the possibility to access port 23, but the NAS didn't negociate an IP adress..
How to know where the problem comes from ?
I don't want to do anything that may make me destroy my data :(

I'm a bit worried about my data on the NAS, even if I have a backup...

Same problem here, in french : http://www.nas-forum.com/forum/topic/25601-staut-pouvant-etre-migre-apres-un-redemarrage/

Hi

If the Status is blinking orange it indicates that the Volume is degraded or crashed, and if you cant get access to your DS, I would contact Synology and let them do the error seeking.

Hello profox,

I have the same problem with a Nas DS211j. After upgrade my DSM (3.2 > 4) and reboot, the state of the NAS display "Can be migrated" (in french, because i'm french), and i have the same problems (orange led...), and i used the same method to try to resolv this, but nothing resolve this problem.
I posted a ticket to Synology Support yesterday and i don't have news for this moment.

Have you find a solution ?

Thanks in advance,

Djoo

Hi djoo,

My problem ("peut être migré" or "can be migrated") appeared just before upgrading in V4... while rebooting the V3.2 before upgrading...
Anyway, the result is the same for you and me.
I've submitted a ticket to the support, got a first answer telling me to confirm the facts and trying some things, in vain. But since my answer to their questions, I didn't received an answer yet.

We must be patient !
I'll be posting here any tips or answer I may receive or find about this problem.

Hi,

I've got something new : I used the Parted Magic live iso to boot on the 1010+.
The GParted tool told me that there was a problem with /dev/md2... what is a RAID array, the data array of the NAS.

The problem is that I can't diagnose or repair it while in Parted Magic OS, because I can't access the Synology system files...

Is there a way to boot the NAS in console mode ? Or to activate the telnet service manually ?

Hello,

I just receive a mail from synology. I will try tonight.

Hi Johann ,

Thank you for the feedback. Please allow us to reply in English.

1. Power off DiskStation (DS) and take out all disks
2. Power on DS without disks
3. Run Assistant and perform the installation with the latest DSM patch and Assistant. You could get them in Download Center of Synology web site
3. Under this way, the installation will be failed but the telnet will be open
4. Please open the port 23 on your router for DS NAT IP (ex. 192.168.xx.xx or 10.0.xx.xx)and we could login via telnet
5. Please insert the disks to DS (onlinely, don't reboot the unit) and provide us the following information

Remote Access Instructions
===============================================================
1. Standard Ports we need you to open: 23
(Please see this link on how to forward your ports, and then select the TELNET application:
http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... rindex.htm)

2. WAN IP Address of your Synology NAS:
[Please go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ to fill in the above information and check if the port is open or not]

===============================================================

Then we could use the command to do the trouble-shooting and try solving this issue remotely.

Hi djoo,

I tried what you have posted, because I no longer receive news from the support, since I answered to their mail...
The problem is that I can't login using the user "root" and the password I give during the beginning of the installation of DSM via Synology Assistant...

I've got :

sh: /usr/syno/bin/synoautoblock: not found
NAS login: root
Password:
sh: /usr/syno/bin/synoautoblock: not found
Login incorrect

Any clue :?:

hi djoo !

My NAS just came back to life !!!!!! It's working like if it never stopped working..

Here is what I did : (but I don't know if it is what has made things working again or not)
  • I renamed the file of firmware 1955 with the name of the 2198
  • I used Synology Assistant to install this firmware. This time, it has formatted the system partition, without formatting the data partition (ouf !)
  • while installing the system file, Assistant told me that the firmware was not the 2198 one.
  • I canceled, and I launched the installation again, but with the real 2198 firmware
  • this time too, it has formatted the system partition, without formatting the data partition
  • And the part of writing configuration lasted more time than the first times I tried to reinstall, when I had the blinking orange LED.
  • Then the NAS has reboot and it is working perfectly now. All my data is there.

Now I'm configuring it again because the backup of the system configuration I made before upgrading has not restored system parameters, like network, firewall...

I think I had luck.
But the problem was in the system partition...

Voila.
Hope it can help. I'm agree that there isn't anything scientific in my process, but it's working again...
Tomorrow, I'll make a backup of everything !

:D

Hi,

Thanks for your tips !

I want to try, but the line in red display "All datas will erased", make me bad when i want to install the "false" firmware. Have you this message when you have processed your scenario ?

A+

I had this warning when I tried without any drive in the NAS...
But it failed because there wasn't any drive in it

I have to admit that I was ready to loose my data...
But I can't remember if I had this message when the drive where in the NAS again...
aaah what a pity I can't remember !
I don't want to make you loose your data !

Ok, I think you may try but before remove all the drives of the NAS. You will see if it plans to format the data partition or not... I remember that, I think...

Bad news for me. Your tip is not a success for me. In fact, the system partition was never formated (false or true dsm).

I think i will wait synology support news.. :(

I'm sorry to ear that...
But I had the exact same problem, the system partition was never formatted...
I really don't know what did make it work again... nor how to force it to be formatted.

You're right, it's safer to wait for a response from the support...

Keep posting here or in a thread of your, to help others.
If I remember anything else, I will update this thread.

I hope you will get your NAS back !
