Can you do all admin tasks through CLI?

Postby multivac » Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:36 pm

Hi all.
I'm a recent owner of a Synology DS211J and new to Linux commands in general. I'm a blind guy using screenreader software on JAWS on Windows. A quick initial question. As the web interface is a little tricky to use with JAWS, I'm wondering is it possible to do everything through the command line, using the tools built into the DS211J / Busybox?

Sort of things I want to do. Adjust the power settings, shutdown times etc. Adjust ownership of files an dpermissions. Guess I need CHMOD and CHOWn for the latter. But can I do everything avaiable in the GUI with commands instead? If so, can you point me to how I can change the power settings for example? is there a config file I need to edit with VI?

Thanks for your help.

Basically you could do everything via the CLI, but some things require editing several config files and if they are not consistent you will run into problems.
Some settings can be changed in /etc/synoinfo the shutdown time can be changed in /etc/crontab (but this file will basically be empty if neither time sync not auto shutdown has ever been enabled in the web interface)
I would suggest to have somebody set up the device for you an do the basic settings, since changing things is much easier than doing a complete setup via CLI.

Thanks.
Sounds like it could be quite easy to mess things up. I'll try get someone to have a look at the GUI.

OK, still finding it tricky to add users and adjust permissions through the webgui, due to how it works with the screenreader. So, I have a couple of questions.

Is it possible to add / edit users and their permissions through busybox on the command line. I'm using the default DSM 3.1. Haven't added any packages.

One thing I've also noticed. I have a folder, lets call it docs. This I added as a shared folder through the webgui. I only want the admin group to have full access RWX. And no access at all for users. This is sort of working but if I test the FTP access with a user account, I still see the docs folder listed, though access is denied. I'd rather have it not show up at all. The same way, the music / web folders are invisible, to a user account. is there something I can change there or is it too late? (Would rather not have to delete docs and add again.)

Cheers

One day, I'll be able to answer someone else's questions on here.

No, I don't think you can get that, at least from server side.
FTP is a simple protocol and it just lists all directory that it finds.

What you want to do is more up to the FTP client, to hide 'useless' directories (not owned, without permission access, etc.)

hmm. I'll have a look at the fileXilla settings. Someone helped me add a new user the other day and they're set up exactly how I want. When accessing FTP through their login, they just see their home folder and a public docs folder.

Hello Multivac,

I'm also a blind user of the 212J. I just purchased it and was disappointed that such a well developed product has virtually no accessibility. I use JAWS as well. It would go a very long way if the buttons were simply labeled. I'm just trying to search for any workaround I can find, so post anything useful you find out on this topic and I'll do the same. I have a very nice $500 paperweight that I'd love to convert into a NAS! :)

Hi.

I am also a totally Blind user of the synology DS109. I contacted support a year ago and helped them test out a previous version of the firmware that was modified to include buttons in a labeled form. I still have the files and can assist with downgrading your synology products if you wish to the accessible firmware. Please PM me or reply to this post if you'd like some help.

All the best,

Mo.

hi Guys. Sorry I missed your replies. :o

Thanks for the offer. I'm a bit reluctant to downgrade to a previous firmware if I'm honest.

Bumping this today, as I'm still fairly new to linux. currently reading Linux cookbook by O'Riely Press (Very good book BTW.) And wondering again if there is any way to add a user from the command line on the DS. i.e. Specifically, if there's any equivalent commands like adduser or useradd? As I understand it, the Linux version on the Diskstations is the very stripped down, Busybox. Perhaps managing users isn't possible through the command line due to Busybox's minimalist functionality but thought I'd ask.

Sorry, not much help here. But just for what it's worth. I've found those labels and checkboxes in the GUI, don't show up whilst using Orca and Firefox in Linux. So however they're coded, it looks like something problematic for screenreaders in general.

hmm. Seems it might be possible to add a user with these instructions I found pertaining to Busybox. I may try this. I'd caution anyone else who does, be careful with editting passwd files and watch the new users permissions.

hello there, I intend to get one of these Synology 2 bay devices, and am also blind and interface with the PC through the JAWS screen reader - have you been able to manage the device through the web interface or command line at all - I appreciate your feedback as it will make a difference in my decision to purchase the unit.
Thank you.

HELLO, i am having better luck using the gui with the JAWS 14 BETA RECENTLY RELEASED FROM fREEDOMsCIENTIFIC - IT IS STILL A LITTLE TRICKY BUT MOST FUNCTIONS ARE DOABLE FOR ME USING ie9 - also Chrome works but some of the form controls work intermittently - with IE things are not perfect but much better than with JAWS 13 - I was ready to give up on the DS212J and return it, very happy to keep it, it's a great device
