I just installed the DS about a week ago and I did't read any manuals/ help pages. Can you explain to me what you are talking about?
Thanks!

Love for a app to allow backup to cloud backup service Crashplan, www.crashplan.com .
They have a Linux client, I use it to upload from my 411+II now, but would be alot easier if it had a built in client into DSM.

Virgin Media backup

Postby brumster » Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:13 pm

As a Virgin cable customer I'd love to be able to point the diskstation at Virgin's backup implmentation and just let it trickle my data to their backup servers.

there current implementation won't let you backup mapped drives. Whilst I can get around this with an iSCSI target that defeats the whole idea of the NAS as a shared device! The only way at the minute is copy data from the NAS to an iSCSI target on a Windows client and then backup to Virgin. Far from ideal and a waste of disk space!

I love 4.0 but have a couple of requests being a heavy DLNA user.

1) I would like to add filters/indexes based on file extension in the media server.
Reason being I would like to have some menu's that say
HQ Music
Ripped CD's
MP3

where by I use .flac , .aac or .mp3 as the attribute to filter by.

Similarly for video as some players don't handle some codecs very well I would like folder that are say
FULL_HD_AVI
DIVX
etc

So I know for the device I am using to playback I can go to say the DIVX folder.

Also the above will speed up searching in mixed folders. e.g. where music folders may have cover art, a .jpg filter on the folder would allow all cover art to be seen,
My home photo folder often has video as my camera does both. A video filer of mp4 or avc on the photo file would quickly show all my videos without the need for me to browse in and out of folders.

Apart from that my other long term wishes remain as per 3.0 wish list
1) DNS server
2) SVN app, am sure many users want to use their Synology box for source control. I have seen it done from command line but I want an easy official installation.

I love my DS211, but in a perfect world I'd love to see the following packages.

A GUI package for generating SSL certificates for internet and/or intranet use and exporting keys to logged in clients (possibly via Synology Assistant)

I'd also like to see an intuitive way to debug hibernation issues. I.E. Something that details why the NAS is going into hibernation, why it is waking up, what caused the NAS to wake up (source IP / user / MAC etc). This would be much easier than trawling through logs.

A way to ignore WOL packets from specific sources under certain conditions might be handy too (such as preventing WOL from a media device between say 3am and 7am). E.g. My BD-R player powers up to update its firmware and program guide when not in use, and in doing so starts network chatter, which then wakes my NAS.

I think it would be great if admin accounts had a built in shell window and a simple (i.e. Notepad like) GUI text editor (vi is a pain in the neck), making it possible to perform shell activities and config file changes without enabling telnet / ssh connections.

edit: Added "internet and/or intranet" re SSL certs

Two simple and quite fundamental network services. It really can't be that difficult to create packages for them...

An NTP Server
A DNS Server

Also if you could enhance the DHCP server a tiny bit to allow user configurable scope options (I need to be able to configure option 150 for IP phones to boot off) I'd be able to get rid of my other servers and just run a Syno environment

Fantastic update with 4.0 as well, thanks for that :D

Hello

It would be very helpful to have a Mailstation updated to the last Roundcube version.
With a lot of useful plugins......

Please do it or explain very clearly how to do it.
Thanks

I would really like a full "newer" version of vlc installed on the nas.
This could then be used to actually stream content to other (handheld) devices.
so thumbs up for vlc 2.0 on ds

I'd like to be able to run a Domain controller for windows-based machines on my DS.
I've seen that it is possible to do this by manually installing a newer version of Samba, but it seems that doing this you lose the ability to see the file log and that you need to configure the domain "by hand".
So it would be nice to have it integrated to the DSM. 8)
I think that central management of users and ressources in the DS (that could be easyly up 24/7 because of its low power consumption and is a major system ressource on the network by itself) will be an interresting feature for many users.
Of course as not all users will have need of this, making it a package would certainly be a sensible choice.

Best regards.

HI.

THX for DMS 4.0 . It's awesome.

I think very simple to create and very useful packages would be.

1) DNS
2) Samba Update to 3.6 + ext. configuring GUI with support for windows domains...
3) SVN Server

3 Packages and i can get rid of my old server .... :P

THX!
