iTunes library in shared music folder

Postby timmov » Fri Jan 27, 2012 5:32 pm

I have copied my iTunes media folder from my iMac to a new "iTunes music" folder on my new NAS DS211J and pointed my iTunes to it on my iMac. This set-up is now working fine.

What would happen if I moved my iTunes media folder intact into a shared "music" folder on the NAS, and then pointed my iTunes to this new location?

More specifically, firstly would my iTunes library on the iMac still find all the media, stay organised and retain artwork, play counts etc?

And secondly would all the media also be made available as a Shared library via the NAS iTunes server?

If yes, then great! If not, is there a way to keep my iTunes library organised and related to iTunes on my iMac and also make it available for streaming via the NAS iTunes server?

Thank you. I'm very new to this.

1) If itunes cant find your media files it will ask you if you want to remove it from library or if you want to search for it. As far as I remember if once you entered the new location for one file, iTunes will find the others automaticaly, but I am not 100% sure about it.

2) yes, iTunes server of the DS isindexing the files from "music" share.

Re: iTunes library in shared music folder

Hello There

I have just purchased a DS411+II and have just realized that I cannot use the apple home sharing on my IOS devices. Ok so I though that I will just keep on running iTunes on my mac and have iTunes use the music now stored on the DS in the music folder.

However I cannot seem to get iTunes to recognize the folder on the DS station. The DS shows up in the SHARED section of the finder window as "DiskStation" and if I select DiskStation/music in the iTunes/preferences/advances/Itunes Media location Folder/change it seems to use /Volumes/music and does nothing.

Am I not mounting the DS correctly? I am interested in how you got it working!

Thanks
Brian Miller
