Remote access snafu - ACK!

Postby jfadex » Fri Mar 02, 2012 11:12 am

I've been using my DS211+ remotely for a while without issue. I recently upgraded my wireless router and everything has since went FUBAR. (Of note, I also added a Netgear Wireless Extender at the same time I changed routers, so I would have a stronger wifi signal throughout my house. Not sure if this has any impact at all but figured I'd mention it)

If someone could help walk me through solutions I would be incredibly obliged.
I've already tried step by steps at resource links such as: http://www.synology.com/us/support/tuto ... et.php#3.3 to no avail.

Router: Netgear N600 WNDR3800
no-ip is jfarino.zapto.org
External Gateway address: 71.199.159.17
DSM ver: 3.2

I manually tried accessing the new router (at 192.168.1.1) and forwarding port 80 and it seemed to work successfully. However, I still can't access diskstation remotely. When I try to use an Iphone application to access my Diskstation via Zapto, it fails to connect. When I try to access my no-ip access via jfarino.zapto.org:5000 it cannot connect.
I've tried using EZ Internet to configure remote access within Diskstation to no avail. My router is not listed and when I try to manually set up router via Diskstation it gets stuck.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of experience using port forwarding or DNS set up in general.

My goals are simply to access diskstation remotely AND utilize DSAudio, photostation, etc. applications on my iphone.

Sorry for the lengthy post; want to provide as much information for a solution as possible!

Did you forward port 5000?
And other ports you might be using like 22 for SSH?
Since you only mention port 80.

As a test you might try to place the NAS in the DMZ, so you can find out if it is the NAT of firewall.

Ports 5000, 5001, 5006 need to be forwarded.

Make sure your port forwarding rules for these ports are translating to the LAN IP of your DS211+ which should be something like 192.168.1.xx

Login in to your N600 directly and check the rules. I used to use this router and it's a bit of a pain if I remember correctly but it works once you set up the rules.

I don't think the extender has anything to do with it but if you want to eliminate it as a variable plug your NAS directly into the N600.

I suspect the port forwarding rules are not pointing to the right internal IP.

If your DS has a fixed IP-address try changing it to DHCP. Some routers have trouble portforwarding when the DS is not in the Routers DHCP client table.
DS 207+ FW: DSM 3.1 -1613
DS 710+ FW: DSM 4.1
DS 212+ FW: DSM 4.1

Hi!
I probably have the same problem. I own a Netgear WNDR3800 router connected to the internet (with static IP address) and DS211j. I had no problem with remote connection via VPN to my DS211j with DSM 3.2 installed, but after I upgraded to DSM 4.0 final version, I'm not able to access my diskstation via VPN anymore. I made the DHCP address reservation manually in my router setup (in DHCP server settings) for the DS211j and I also set up the 1723 port forwarding.

I also wonder, why the automatic router setup in the DSM Control Panels / Router Configuration never finishes. It always stops at the third step (Removing ...) with a red cross.

Any help, please?
Thanks.

Try setting up an another service (like Filemanager) and check if that is working. This is to check if it is a router/network fail or a DSM Fail. If you have a smartphone check it with that (don't use Wifi, but 3G). Remember to deactivate the DSM firewall when testing.

I never used the DSM's router configuration but what I know is that the router must be compatible and uPnP most be enable in the router settings. Also your DSM needs to have a static IP, that's why I don't use it...

There are some firewall problems regarding to DSM 4.0 2197. Disable your firewall and update your firmware to 2198.

Some problems related to this:

- Can't send system mails
- Can't resolve host addresses (login with ssh/telnet, use nslookup to check).
- VPN connection probems

Change log:

Fixed an issue where you may not be able connect to your DiskStation via Internet when Firewall is enabled and set as “Deny Access if no rules are matched”.
Fixed an issue where the access to DiskStation share folders via CIFS protocol may be interrupted when DiskStation joins the LDAP service as client, and the account password is changed.
Improved the stability of accessing external NTFS drives via CIFS protocol.
Other minor fixes.

I had different (network) problems too, but upgrading the DSM Firmware solved it.

Alright, I'm pretty sure this is set correctly. The only question I have is that it gives three options for the type: TCP/UDP, TCP, or UDP. Default is TCP/UDP and that's how I left it. My Diskstation is at 192..228 and that is where these ports are forwarded.

I use no-ip.com. Am I typing the external "address" correctly? "jfarino.zapto.org:5000"?

and in the no-ip host settings, should DNS Host (A) be checked?

Last but not least, I utilize Avast for my firewall. After checking my port forwarding rules as you suggested I paused all services, tried to connect, and was unsuccessful. Please let me know if you can think of anything else.

Looks like to me that it is working. When going to http://jfarino.zapto.org I get redirected to http://jfarino.zapto.org:5000 showing the DSM login screen.

Your https://jfarino.zapto.org:5001 is not working. Try to get that working. It's much more preferred (because of security).

For http and https connection only TCP is used. For security reasons activate The DSM 'auto block' function and use https (5001) connections only.
