Belkin N600 DB

Postby jemetpl » Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:41 pm

I've just bought a DS110j for home use and I've been impressed so for.

However, I'm having major problems setting up external access. Unfortunately my router isn't in the supported list and I have to set up port forwarding manually. Frankly, I don't know how to do this and the manual assumes a level of knowledge I don't have.

I've googled around and not yet found a simple tutorial that explains how to do this. I've found the port forwarding page of the router but I don't know what velues to put in to get it to work.

Can someone help?

Hi

Your router don't support that enough ports are opened, so one suggestion is to set your DS IP as DMZ, and thereby open all ports towards your DS, this should work, this is done inside your router.

Always a good idea to set the IP on your DS to fixed IP, before setting DMZ IP, this is done inside your DS.

Thanks for your post.

Am I right in thinking that using DMZ in that way creates a significant security issue. If it does and that's the only way to deal with this problem, then I think I'll have to get another router. I'm surprised that the Belkin N600 can't meet the requirements of the DS.

Hi

Well significant is perhaps not completely true, but it is worse if it's a pc you set in DMZ, on your DS you don't enable the services you don't use, use IP address ban at login try, use the firewall, then your DS is still very hard to open.

How many services do you need to open access?
If it's not too many, you can use this portforward guide as template:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... ote_PC.htm (hope I picked right Belkin model for N600)
then you need this page:
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_sho ... 9&lang=enu
to find which ports you need to open.
DS-411 (DSM 4.2-3202) w/ 2x WD10EFRX + 1x HD154UI
DS-106j (DSM 3.0-1357), PATA-to-SATA adapter, 2.5" HM250HI

Thanks for your posts.

I've tried the suggested solutions and I've had some help from a friend who knows much more about the technicalities of this than I do and we haven't got it to work.

The problem seems to lie with my superhub and router set up. I have the 50Mb Virgin service with their superhub and use the Belkin as a router connected to the superhub. I had to do this at the built in wireless service in the Superhub is rubbish.

Has anyone with a Virgin superbub and separate router got this work with the Diskstation? If so, what router is it? If noone has managed to do this I think I will scrap Virgin and go adsl.
