Can Audio Station be assigned to a different folder?

Postby Redflee » Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:51 pm

I'm copying my music collection to my DS212, and see that the multimedia apps (iTunes, Audio Station, PHoto Station) seem to be set up to default to:

/photo
/music
/video

Is there a way to configure audio station and the itunes, photo station, etc., to point to different, already existing directories on my DS212, or am I going to have to create those folders and move my photo, audio, and video files to them? That will be an issue, as I'm creating a structure w/a top level Family folder w/subfolders for docs, music, video, utilties, etc., and I'm mapping the Family folder to each PC as a drive.

Appreciate feedback on this file location issue and the built-in apps.

I found this process identified here (http://dev.eek.be/2010/01/change-folder ... ia-server/) as an option, but hoping there is a way built into DSM to do this.

Hi,

Yes, there is: the built in media server, you can configure which directories to use. This has been implemented in the lastest released version of DSM 3.2.

Control Panel - Media Indexing Services - 3rd tab called 'indexed' folder. And here you can add your own created / shared folder. Hope this helps ! :P :P
iMac - 2.8 - i7 - 16GB - Lion
iTouch - 32 GB - iOS 5.0.01
MacBook Pro Early 2008 - 2.4

iPad 16 GB & iPad2 16 GB - iOS 5.0.1
Apple TV1 - #Leia / Apple TV2 - #DarthVader
Onkyo TX-NR708 / Technics - SL 1200 MKII (Vinyl still rules)
Synology DS211 - DSM 4.1 - #R2D2 / Synology DS209J - DSM 4.1 - #SkyWalker

So far as I can tell adding additional folders to be indexed in Media Server only works for the Media Server (DLNA/UPNP) access...I've included my personal music directory on my DS212 in the Media Server index list, and my music now shows up fine via DLNA clients, but Audio Station can only see what's in the "Music" folder no matter what I do.

Can someone confirm that Audio Station is limited and can only see the /Music folder, and that I'm not missing some simple step to make Audio Station see the additional music folder I've indexed in the Media Server?

Audio Station is NOT limited to the /volume1/audio folder. Our music is in:

/volume1/shared/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music

which is an added Indexed Folder in Media Indexing Service in the Control Panel (without the volume1 on the front). Works fine with Audio Station in a web browser as well as the DS audio app on an iPad and an iPod Touch. ("shared" is a shared folder I created at the same level as audio, photo, and video).
DS 1512+ w/3GB, 5 x 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001 8.2TB RAID 6, half files/half Time Machine.
Icy Dock MB559U3S-1SB enclosure w/4TB Hitachi UltraStar via USB 3 for files backup
UVERSE to AirPort Extreme + 2 AirPort Express w/speakers. TRENDnet TV-IP312WN camera
CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD Sine Wave UPS
DSM 4.1-2661 w/SSH + SFTP, VPN Server, Syslog Server, Media Server, Mail Server, Mail Station,
Audio Station, Surveillance Station, Photo Station, Web Station - DS Apps on iPad & iPod Touch.

Thanks...found out this is only supported in DSM 4.0, I'm still on 3.2 due to the relative newness of 4.0. For us 3.2 users appears there isn't an option to do this. For 4.0 users:

Library
The library contains music in the music shared folders or any other indexed folders of your Synology DiskStation, which will be organized into the following categories.

Note: To add a folder as an indexed folder, log in to DSM as admin (or a user belonging to the administrators group), and then go to Main Menu > Control Panel > Media Indexing Service > indexed Folder. For more information, click the Help button at the top-right corner of the window.

Download 4.0, but immediately before you install it, slowly stop all packages in Package Center, go disable DDNS, Web Services, mail server, etc and if you're using Macs with Time Machine, make sure none are scheduled to back up within the next half hour or so. You may even want to turn off Time Machine on the Macs. Then reboot the DiskStation and give it about five minutes before you start the upgrade. At least 10 minutes after the upgrade, slowly re-enable what you disabled and "run" the packages again.

Some may say this is overkill, but I've been doing this for upgrades ever since I first ran an OS on a hard disk, some 25 years ago. It's belt and suspenders towards helping ensure no processes are running or files open that may interfere with the upgrade. Given the number of problems after updates I see here, I highly recommend it.

Thanks! Advice copied and saved for the DSM 4.x update when I apply it. I agree w/your conservative approach, eliminating as many variables as possible always helps w/success rates (and makes troubleshooting problems easier). :)
