To add injury to insult, I'm now getting random emails begging me for downgrade patches for a handful of models.

It's giving me a bit of a headache as I've a que forming.

I'm sorry. It was not to put pressure on you. I just wanted to know if you thought that it is possible to downgrade the firmware. I can wait a while, if you think you can do a patched firmware downgrading. It would be the easiest for me if we could do it this way, otherwise I will consider your suggestion.

I can see that you have been busy making patches. You are quite popular, with respect to downgrade

I've seen with the current mod it's changing /etc, but not /ect.defauts so I'm looking in to hda1.tgz and then recalculating the checksum.

However once i go into hda1.tgz you won't be able to go up and down like you can for 2166 > 1955 > 2166.

Anything after 2166 should flash forward. but i guess from what you're saying you want things like i do. Syn really made a mess IMO regarding photo station redevelopment... The blog on the other hand looks quite nice... but I've not evaluated it for more than a few moments.

SSH would be the quickest option in this case.

I think I'm removing the FTP services after DSM 4.0 beta, as users take firmwares and never leave feedback on how flashing went on.

I'm sorry to hear that you consider to remove FTP services. I'm going to sign your guestbook, I was still kind of hoping that there was a way go down to 1748 (the easy way)...
Once i know what to write in your guest book I will. The downgrade from 266 -> 1955 went well

Yes, you could take it back up again, that's the way the IC works. In theory (i don't have a clue as Ive not done it yet) but once at 1748, 1742, 16xx, 12xx whatever.

It won't possibly go to 2166, but will goto 2167 and anything after.

FTP services, bandwidth costs money.. and you wouldn't believe how many times people take files. I've had letters from my ISP previously about excess of 150GB+ in a month. (40 is my allowance) so they were.. a little annoyed.

I'm struggling a bit unzipping firmware as one of my RAM modules failed in the machine i use.

Currently 1024MB ram, win XP, unzipping firmware just doesn't happen. Ive some RAM on order that should arrive tomorrow... hopefully!

Once I've got that i can look further.

I have just started using a DS212 and have installed DSM4.0 on it.

Is there a way to rollback to DSM3.2 knowing that my drive is empty so I won't loose anything ?

Yes use the 212 firmware, for 212 look back in this thread!
