Your DS needs to get your Public IP address from your broadband router. Under Network, have you defined your DNS and Gateway IP addresses? A quick test on my DS by deleting either of these entries confirmed that they both needed to be there. Typically your Gateway will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 depending on your broadband routers setup. The DNS address will be defined by your ISP but should be on your broadband router status page or other associated setup page. If this fixed your issue, perhaps add "- fixed" to the topic description for this post.

I'm suspecting that once you have resolved this you are going to have more questions about actually setting up and making a connection over the internet. This thread might be of further assistance: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=145&t=38406#p151541

I am having exactly the same problem for the past week. My ds1511+ starts everyday at 8am but it has no internet access, while other computers connected to the same network are fine. The DNS and Gateway address are specified correctly as 192.168.1.1 (my router).

This is the strange thing. If I restart the Diskstation it is able to connect to the internet. I am using DSM 4.

@chas0001 - Are you using a static IP for your DS? If you have it setup to use DHCP assigned IP what's very likely happening is that the DHCP server is allocating the IP address previously assigned to your DS to another device on your network, then when your DS wakes up it has a duplicate IP and thus can't connect. When you reboot the DS, it's getting a new DHCP assigned IP address so all then works.

The DS was using an IP address provided by the DHCP server but I had reserved the address of 192.168.1.222 on the router. There were no duplicate IP's on the network. The disk station was working fine on the internal network it just could not access the internet. A reboot always allowed it to connect to the internet again.

I read up on it and decided to reset the device (not a full reset just a holding in of the reset button for 3-4 seconds until it beeps). Apparently it clears out all the network settings and starts afresh. Since doing this it is now working fine. I think that the network settings on the DS must have somehow got corrupted.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,

I had this very frustrating problem for a long time and could find no good reason for it.

I added another Diskstation and noticed the DNS server the second NAS was using was different to my first one. I investigated within the router and found that the ISP had changed my DNS server address. As soon as I updated my DNS server in the network settings it immediately detected the external address again.

I feel a bit stupid, it should not have taken me this long to work that out! Hope it helps someone

Therefore in general you should set the IP of your router as DNS address and not the one of your ISP.

Not sure if this can help you but it worked for me after weeks of trying. My DiskStation had the correct DNS address from my ISP so I never thought of changing it. My station could never detect an external addres nor could I get the email notification to work. Maybe this should be posted to several threads :-) I changed the DNS settiing in network configuration to point to my router's address, in my case 192.168.1.1 same as the gateway and now all of the above are working.

Thanks Guys. I struggled with this problem for a while. Yes setting the router IP as the DNS name fixed the issue. :D
