NAS drives not "reconnecting" when I boot up

Postby keiron99 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:59 pm

Apart from my SSD in my tower, which I use solely for programs, all my media in on my DS410j NAS.

The problem I have is that I use Itunes for my audio but when I start Itunes, I get the "!" symbol next to every track. This is because the network drives are not "connected". I get the warning message about this popping up from the toolbar when I boot the PC, plus, there's a little red X by all the drives in Windows Explorer.

However, when I click on the drive in Explorer, it wakes it up, and everything works as it should.

Is there a way to get the drives to automatically connect when I boot up?

All of mine automatically reconnect. Try disconnecting and reconnecting them. Often this happens because Windows gets confused about the log-in for the network drive(s).

Thanks. I tried removing and re-mapping, but the problem still persists.

A huge annoyance as I'm having to leave the PC on 24/7...and one of the main reasons for getting a NAS was that I wouldn't have to do that.

Two things I had to do:

1. In Window you must have an administrator login for your computer. (mine was set up for no login at all. it won't work in XP)
2. When mapping the drives, you have to check the "reconnect at login" and put your "windows" login password in

Hope this helps for you. Synology does a poor job at explaining this.

Best solution is to create a user on your NAS with same credentials (username and password) as your widows login.

Thanks.

I always log in to my PC (Windows 7) as admin. I have now just created a password for it, the same password as on my NAS, for which I also use the username "admin" (the dafault username).

I had already checked the box to "reconnect at log in". I've just been through remapping the drives again, but I was not asked to enter a Windows password. Where would I do that?

So I have tried all the steps above and unfortunately it is still not working.

Interestingly, the only software that is causinig me problems with this is Itunes and Picasa. In Winamp for example, when I click on a track in the library, it connects and plays fine. Same with Word documents, they just open.

If you have the same username and password then you wont be asked for the credentials when mapping or connecting. Not needed.

OK that explains it...but unfortunately the drives still do not connect!

I'm having the same problem under these circumstances:

Win 7, no logon password.

If I turn on the NAS after I turn on the computer, the drive is shown with a red X and can't be accessed by my backup up program, Genie Timeline Pro.

If I click on the Red X then the red x disappears and the backup starts working again.

Is there any way to make this recognition automatic?

Everything worked fine [finally!] yesterday but after i switched everything off and restarted this morning the DS is not visible on my network again. I can see it partially with the Syn Assistant and I can access it with my Popcornhour player but the files are not writeable again.
I am looking for the box to check for reconnecting after logout

I am having the same problem with Win7. I do not have a password set up on my PC, and when I mapped the shared folders to drive letters in Win I was not asked for a user name or password. When Win boots it reports it could not connect those network drives. The drives have the red X. If I click on the drive, the NAS wakes up and the drive connects. It is a pain with iTunes.

It makes no difference if you use the same password and user name on both the PC and the NAS or have no password, or if the user names are the same or different. That is not the issue.

If you are using a wirless adaptor you will have this issue.
The drives are trying to be mapped before the wireless connection is istablished.

Are you using a wireless adaptor?

Mark, no I am using Ethernet. I don't have fixed IP address for the Windows7 computer and have wondered if that is the problem. The router does usually assign the same IP address.

Sometimes when the computer has recently connected to the NAS which is subsequently not hibernating, there is no problem. I have tried accessing the NAS from my iPad using Synology DS File to make sure the NAS is awake, but that does not seem to make a difference.

I have the same problem (just bought a new Windows7 laptop). It is a Win7 issue, not a NAS issue. I am trying to solve it, but searching on the internet there's tons of suggestions as to what works for some people. I found this (but it didn't work for me - maybe it works for you):

Claus

Yes yes yes! At last that worked for me (so far at least)!

As suggested in the article, Win7 is trying to access the mapped NAS drive before the network has been initialised. Changing that solved the problem. There is a slight delay in booting Windows, but it saves time as I don't have to click on the drive letter, and importantly iTunes will load ok now without messing around.

Thanks!

Here are the instructions:

Start > Run > type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) click ok. Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon set this to Enable then reboot.
